Not sure if it's possible for mods to put a "sticky" with links to credible sources that stays at the top of this thread pages.

Some

suggestions are:

World Health Organisation:
https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019
NZ Ministry of Health:
https://www.health.govt.nz/our-work/diseases-and-conditions/novel-coronavirus-2019-ncov
NZ MOH "Healthline":
https://www.health.govt.nz/your-health/services-and-support/health-care-services/healthline
Health Commision of Hubei Province - daily updates (in *Chinese):
http://wjw.hubei.gov.cn/fbjd/dtyw/
Health Commision of China - daily updates (in *Chinese):
http://www.nhc.gov.cn/xcs/yqtb/list_gzbd.shtml
The Lancet 2019-nCoV resource centre:
https://www.thelancet.com/coronavirus
US Centre for Disease Control:
https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html
BNO News (so far so good in terms of them collating up to date data on global cases):
https://bnonews.com/index.php/2020/02/the-latest-coronavirus-cases/

*google translate does a pretty good job translating these pages.  While I'm skeptical of the accuracy of official reports out of China, the CT is getting so out of hand the signal to noise ratio makes it impossible to google for accurate verified news.

At 04:00 on February 7th, 31 provinces (autonomous regions, municipalities) and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps reported that 3,399 newly diagnosed cases (2,841 in Hubei) and 1,280 severe cases (1,193 in Hubei) were newly added. There were 86 deaths (81 in Hubei, 2 in Heilongjiang, 1 in Beijing, Henan, and Gansu), and 4214 suspected cases (2073 in Hubei).
On the same day, 510 cases were cured and discharged (298 cases in Hubei), and 26,702 close contacts were lifted from medical observation.
As of 24:00 on February 7th, 31 provinces (autonomous regions, municipalities) and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps have reported cumulatively. There are 31774 confirmed cases (6101 of which are severe cases), 2,050 cases have been cured and discharged, and 722 have died. A total of 34,546 confirmed cases were reported (14 cases in Heilongjiang Province), and 27,657 suspected cases were reported. A total of 345,498 close contacts were tracked, and 189,660 close contacts were still in medical observation.
A total of 52 confirmed cases were reported from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan: 26 cases in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (1 death), 10 cases in the Macau Special Administrative Region (1 case was cured and discharged), and 16 were in Taiwan (1 case cured and discharged).

Trend is similar to yesterday.

"Severe" case tally has increased by about 1200, but "cured and discharged" has increased by only about 500.

When those figures are the other way around, then it'll be better news.

Coronavirus-2019: travel advice

Your insurer is unlikely to pay if you decide not to travel due to the public health emergency.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

So the NZ Herald allowed a Chinese official to post an opinion piece to talk up China in the wake of coronavirus. Not much objectivity and not exactly the full story as far as facts are concerned:

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12306528

Wonder if he's a regular columnist? :D I mean virus issue aside... hope I'm not the only one that sees a problem with letting officials from a communist dictatorship write opinion pieces in New Zealand...

I don't have an issued with option peices of diplomats & senior consular staff being published in major NZ publications, even from non-democratic nations. In this case, the author and the position they hold is clearly stated, and at the top of the piece. I wouldn't expect a fair and balanced piece from a writer with such close ties to the topic...

In closing, I doubt that NZ would / could implement such dramatic measures as china has to control the virus, although factors like a lower population density, less use of public transport, being in summer, and having a good health system would help us.

I commend china on taking such drastic action to control the virus, but in the area's of open and transparent reporting there is room for improvement.

So you're ok with Chinese officials posting articles even when its proven they straight up lie to the point of being censored, as shown in the post after mine? A lot of people don't look at the authors of articles and/or have no clue how the CCP works - they expect accurate reporting. A lot of people actually think that China "modernizing" means its government is getting more democratic lol - the complete opposite has been happening over the past 10-15 years, but you really need to have lived there to know that.

Yeah China & the WHO claiming countries shouldn't restrict travel... Nope, its a good thing nations also listen to their own experts in pathology who are not part of the WHO bureaucracy. Its been proven during the 14 day incubation period there might be no symptoms like fever, which is all they test for at airports... sooooo...

Interesting hypothesis suggesting reasons for a correlation between different smoking rates in China by gender, and apparent gender bias in mortality / severity of nCoV. (ie - takes it beyond the normal assumption that if you smoke, then your lung function and general health will suffer - so pneumonia is more likely to kill you)

TL:DR:  Smoking increases expression of ACE2 receptors in lung tissue.  nCoV gains entry to invade body cells by first binding with ACE2 receptors on the cells, so if you've got more ACE2 receptors in your lung tissue then it makes sense that an infection with nCoV could be more severe.

What are you implying? It sounds a bit immature and off topic the way you've written it.

Well I really hope I'm staying on topic, as I don't want to be banned!

Here's an article from a reputable site, though it's an opinion piece.

I have travelled the world, places do not operate like it does here in New Zealand. However, places can also build a hospital in 10 days using the same culture, something that can't be done here in NZ given 10 years.

If this was from the New York Times rather than the New York Post, I would be more inclined to take it seriously. The Post seems to lean towards tabloid sensationalism. I'm not sure how credible it is as a source.

this one is of a similar vein, but links to numerous (at a glance about one every other sentence) sources to back up their statements (did not check every source, but one links to washington post)

Two kiwis so far stuck on cruise ship anchored in Japan test positive for Corona:

https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/new-zealand/2020/02/coronavirus-outbreak-second-kiwi-tested-positive-on-cruise-ship-off-japan.html

That is a really bad situation. Hopefully they can do some creative engineering with the aircon to increase the possibility of killing the virus in there.

Interesting that the website "Foreign policy.com," is having a number of in-depth articles about the virus.

In the past, it's been more about embassies and diplomats.

I guess it's a convenient way to discuss Chinese foreign policy, with recent real world examples.
