Clawhammer:

So it looks like the truth might be about to escape, something else to consider before you buy that EV

Electricity has the get 3 to 5 times more expensive before it matches the price of petrol, so it isn't really much to consider.

Clawhammer:

From  One News article

A four year study on energy usage in New Zealand households warns current trends will not be sustainable when the country makes the complete switch to renewable energy.....

When you grow you population by 60% while simultaneously downsizing your generation capacity instead of upsizing it, the result shouldn't surprise anyone with 1/2 a brain. In the last political term infrastructure for our growing population was a hot topic but it seems to have gone off the boil. We can't rest on the hydrogenation laurels of our grandparents forever, at some point we're going to have to break some eggs to make an omelette ie build something without b!tching and moaning about it. Building infrastructure in N.Z. stimulates employment and the economy. Buying 60% of your oil from dictatorships does little for anyone's economy, it just seems to fund wars.

Privatising major power companies also limits what governments want to do.

Realistically the previous government won't introduce any policies that materially change power company profits.

IE compulsory buyback of excessive domestic solar power at reasonable rate that encourages up take.
Line charges that reflect usage rather than fixed amount.
Rapidly phase out non led bulbs.

During a live appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience, Rogan shared with Musk his weed, which has been legal since January in the state of California where the podcast was filmed.

Wellington's trial BEV bus has it's batteries mounted on the roof.

Why would you do that - a large amount of weight up high, which can't be great for stability.

Surely not?

Must be those low rider type buses that kneel for disabled people and have a floor pan 1 foot off the ground.

Linuxluver:

....Or increasing incentives for businesses to (re)locate in the South Island where energy is 100% renewable, 24/7.

Urban myth, probably perpetuated by South Islanders.

An advantage to having renewables in both Islands is that the weather is usually different, so they are able to support each other.

A screenshot of this mornings data shows power was being exported to the South Island. This is typical when we are running out of hydro capacity in the South Island. They start using South Island hydro to meet peak demand and off peak, slow it down and make up the shortfall with hydro or worse thermal from the North Island.

Yes but ... if SI never exported power to NI - would we have sufficient water in those reservoirs right now?

...ah yes, but if the SI never exported power to the NI would the dams, or that many dams, have been built in the first place? It's chicken & egg scenario. You might find that without NI demand they would have fewer dams and put in a coal plant on the Westcoast to meet SI dry season shortfall.

Bacuse its used to be a trolley bus, and when they were redeveloped a few years ago. they stashed a bunch of Lead acid cells up there as well as all of the trolley pole gear,

So it was probably the easiest place to mount them for the trial,

they also stuck the wright spped turbine up there, so when they abandoned that idea.. it also lent its self to just sticking the batteries up there..

The question is when they convert the rest of the trolley fleet will the stick the rest up there or will they mount them under the floor,

This is called "feed-in tariffs" and it could work well as long as the proportion of micro-generation is small

Line charges that reflect usage rather than fixed amount.

The problem here is that actually the lines companies costs are almost completely fixed: it makes hardly any difference in the cost of operation of your grid connection whether you use only 500 units a month or 5000 units a month.
The only way to actually save on lines charges is to go off-grid

Rapidly phase out non led bulbs

There is very little energy efficiency difference between LED and compact fluorescent bulbs. This will make no odds to the power companies (gentailers or lines companies)
Where LEDs win is on durability, they should last much longer.
BTW you can't buy incandescent bulbs anymore, or not easily.

Unless you got to Bunnings, Countdown, Mitre10, or.... pretty much anywhere. Very easy to buy.

Incandescent bulbs will naturally go the way of the VCR and cassettes. I bet those retailers were also the last ones stocking blank VHS tapes and CRT TV cabinets.

A 75 watt light-bulb uses the same power in a week (8 hours per night) as a 2kw clothes drier uses in 1 hour. Point is that when talking about bayonet or ES bulbs, power to be saved there by forcing everyone to change to LED is miniscule and simply not worth the reward. Arguable, investing in clothes lines would be more cost effective than LED bulbs.
