The Japanese version of a farming ute is the Suzuki Super carry, head to any rural faming village and they are everywhere

super carry

Sorry but as someone who grew up on a farm, that is a rather poor substitute for a Hilux.

Might work fine in an orchard or other flat property (provided it doesn't get too boggy) but won't cope with anything moderately off-road or serious load carrying or tow a decent trailer

I've nothing against mini-utes.  We had little Suzuki ute on our farm.   But .... even in our application of gentle hills and relatively dry , pumicey soils  ... 4WD and large wheels were essential.

I never said it was a substitute, The comment was made in reference to the OP saying he had never seen any utes in Japan....

"farms" in Japan fit your description of a flat property perfectly....

From what I have seen, what qualifies as a farm in Japan would be considered a lifestyle block in NZ.

Probably because Japanese farms usually have roads and don't need to go off-road nearly as much like in NZ.

Different kind of farms, hence the need for this thing. You drive a big ol' ute over there and they'll think you're American.

I'd still rather have a Jimny ute.

We had the predecessor to the Jimny a Suzuki SJ ute.

Swapped in a Datsun 1.6L, up-sized up the wheels extended the tray and fitted a full body set of roll bars.  That thing would go anywhere - provided you didn't have to sidle.

You can even get a sister (?) version in electric, but not here. There an interesting description/discussion in this Trademe post and the Q+A about import restrictions on what would otherwise be an awesome runabout for building supplies and trips to the tip:

https://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/suzuki/auction-1760263095.htm?rsqid=e3131efcbca84ac29488982be9a66d32

Interestingly, their website refers to export sales to Australia.

No, definitely don't allow those things to be imported. Reason - they are a forward control type vehicle. And they have a terrible crash safety rating. Not so much of a problem driving around a farm at 20Km/Hr. But deadly in a head on crash on the open road in NZ.

Here is an example crash test video on how unsafe this type of vehicle is.

Even the government of Brazil forced the closure of the factory that used to make Kombi vans. As they said that they were unsafe. Yet the above Mitsubishi van was still available brand new in NZ after the Kombi factory closure. It's pretty bad when even 3rd world countries have tougher commercial vehicle crash safety regulations than NZ. And the people who mostly drive such vehicles in NZ tend to be employees. As the boss doesn't care if his workers end up in a wheelchair. And Worksafe doesn't appear to show any interest at all in vehicle safety. Despite at least 10 people getting killed on the roads per workplace death.

Having started a new job at a vehicle dealership, I am now 10,000% pro-vehicle subsidies.

The more I read those LHD rules, the sillier they seem.

They are designed to cater for car enthusiasts.  They make little sense beyond that.

Notwithstanding the possible C02 benefits, I'm not sure I would like to see a whole lot more LHD vehicles on the road - IMO there shouldn't be any.

The govt seem to have gone quiet on what incentives they have planned. It must be putting a dampener on EV sales, as people hold off incase there is a incentive (be it on new or second hand cars). Will be interesting to see what they end up offering.

Electric vehicle registrations were down for the month of November.  It could be all car registrations were down (some indication of softness) or it could be seasonality (as seen in other years).

Or it could be that Nero fiddles while Rome burns.  Nine years in opposition plus 14 months in Government.  Still no policy.  Unbelievable.

My memory could be wrong, but weren't they suppose to announce more with 2 weeks?

This sort of thing couldn't come soon enough.

James Shaw is  in Poland for the COP 24 climate conference for the next 2 weeks,

If there was a good time for any such EV announcements it would have to be during or just after this sort of thing...

Its going to be interesting to see what they(labour) settle on as an incentive package. It should ideally help low and middle income people but I can not see how they can implement such a policy.I must say James Shaw after saying he would have an anouncement in November some time look a bit tardy and generally not very reliable.

Hopefully any announcement will also say how many EVs would be needed to offset the carbon emissions of flying to Poland and back.

Even worse, is that National back in 2008 enacted the current RUC exemption for electric vehicles. Not long after they came to power. Has the current government implemented anything yet to do with EVs?

Edit to add

Things that are in force or otherwise apply now. As opposed to a future date.
