Compare to something we already know like Nissan March. Nissan March = 58 horsepower. Great Wall ORA R1 = 48 horsepower, This is a city/village car.

There are other factors. China EV subsidies available only for vehicles with 250km+ range. Good news for Tesla. Great Wall made a design decision to go with a less powerful and perhaps more efficient motor to achieve the range requirement.

Nissan March serves many people perfectly well as a village/urban car in NZ. A question tho. Is Nissan March even available NZ new here? Seems like a limited market for this size car in NZ. ORA R1 would be welcome if it does get here somehow. As a very local vehicle it would have some uses if it meets NZ standards for imports.

kingdragonfly: Great Wall's ORA R1 is smaller than a "kei" car, like the Mitsubishi icar / i-MiEV.

I was incorrect. It's the same length and height as the Mitsubishi, but a little wider, 19 cm.

It does have a good amount of safety equipment: electronic stability program, six airbags, parking camera and something called a "smart front-view system".

Agree. Really impressive feature list. It's hard to believe it's all in the base model for CNY 59800. Makes sense tho when you think about it. Individually those parts are cheap. From there it's all design, production planning and assembly. All things that enterprises in China have excelled at in other product areas.

Regarding the Nissan March being available new in NZ, the answer is not anymore.

That said, Nissan NZ has slashed their lineup, in order to focus on SUV's. There current non-electric line up is 1x Ute, 2x sports cars, and 5x SUV's.

The Nissan leaf hatchback is a recent (re-)introduction, it has just landed, or is due to sometime soon. Important to note that the leaf offered is not the latest "e+" specification with bigger battery and motor.

Historically the Nissan Micra (same car as what is sold as "march" in japan). The forum generation micra was (judging by what is on trademe) available with both 1.2 & 1.5 liter engines. The 1.2 L natrual aspirated engine was availiable in 58kW & 59kW tunes, and the 1.5L was 73kW. You have to go back to before 2002 to find engines (typically 1.0L or less) offered in the march with below 58hp (43kW).

One of my wifes friends has a Nissan march, and it meets her need OK.

I think that the market that would buy a 35kW car with a 102km/h top speed in New Zealand is quite limited. It would need to have a significant appeal in other area's, such as styling, or extremely low price.

Sadly it seem's to be the market expectation that new cars, even small ones have 80kW+ engines.

As a closing remark, you don't seem to need as much power in electric cars as petrol cars. One of the reason's large engines are sort after in petrol cars is that they give a more relaxed driving experience, this is due to peak power in petrol cars normally being at 5000+RPM, and at that speed petrol engines are very noisy and intrusive. Obviously not an issue in electric cars.
