Good. Keep NZF out of Govt thats whats required. The benefit of a coalition partner trimming back radical changes, has ended up being obstructive and bribery

The issue is still availability. With the rise in demand for EVs internationally the supply of secondhand imports is reducing together with increasing prices.

On the subject of price parity this article predicts it to occur within 2 years as a result of carbon taxation strategies coupled with battery technology improvements. NZ aren't alone in adoption of 'clean car' strategies.

You're not wrong, but that doesn't mean we should just shrug and say "We've tried nothing and we're all out of ideas." Availability will always be an issue for New Zealand. For everything, not just cars. But also, if the manufacturers find their production capacity can't keep up with demand, you know what they'll do? Build more production capacity.

The flip side of the proposal was cleaner ICE vehicles. So even if people aren't buying an EV because they can't afford it or there is simply isn't the stock when they need it, they're still incentivised to buy a cleaner dino-burner than before as well.

Yep, I know so many that brought brand new hybrids. There seems to be plenty of them around as well, pre owned, but we need boatloads of them or older EV's if we want to make any dents

The excess generation that will result should make electricity cheaper to consumers (flying pigs?) and prompt an increase in uptake of Electric Vehicles. No excuses along the lines of "where will the power come from for them", and this has to also remove any need for Huntly to be burning coal.

I thought I read somewhere (possibly here?) that there wasn't currently the ability to move the power that currently supplies Tiwai into the national grid, and that it was going to cost hundreds of millions to rectify that? Wouldn't this result in moot point for power prices? Transpower will want it's money back for that sort of spend.

That was where I was coming from with my 'flying pigs' comment. There is a lack of transmission capacity to get Manapouri's generation north so upgrades will be required including a second Cook strait cable according to the comments on RadioNZ news just now. The government announcement happening now should give us the big picture on this issue.

Transpower recently consulted on a "Clutha Upper Waitaki Lines Project" (see: https://www.transpower.co.nz/news/transpower-seeks-input-clutha-upper-waitaki-lines-project), so that's all the preparatory work for the grid upgrades so the Manapouri power surplus can be shipped north already done.

Transpower said the need for the project “could come from ... the availability of excess generation capacity if the Tiwai Aluminium Smelter were to close or cut back production”.
Also their "funding enabled a project timeline that could have resulted in the completion of the project by the end of autumn in 2022. However, with work pausing during the Government’s Alert Level 4 lockdown, and with planning and procurement decisions required earlier to meet international supply chain timelines impacted by Covid-19, the target completion is now winter 2023"

So no need get any pigs flying, they're already loaded into a transporter.
We just need a driver and some fuel

Nissan has finally unveiled the Nissan Ariya. Based on the US price it should start at around $70,000 NZD when it gets here.

Scheduled for 2021.

Comes with 63 kWh or 87 kWh batteries with liquid cooling. The 87 kWh is supposed to get about 480 KM range.

It is not a bad looking car.

Great to see that Nissan has finally built a ground up EV instead of butchering an ICE chassis (aka all versions of the Leaf). It has some big H.P. and torque numbers - and factory specified towing capacity (however modest)!!! Looking forward to it.

Spec level looks impressive, and I would pick the base model will turn up around the $80k mark here. I would pick the first ones start turning up on trademe in early 2022.

Will make a good competitor for the Kona EV, Nero EV, Model Y etc. Could also pull a few sales from the likes of the outlander PHEV and Rav4 Prime.

Seems like CHAdeMO will die out in Europe and north america, leaving NZ as an oddball stuck with two fast charging standards.

Speaking of RAV 4 Prime, it looks like Toyota Australia won't be bringing it to the Oz market due to what they're picking as a significant price increase over the current RAV Hybrid models. They don't believe it will sell in other words. Anyone heard what plans (if any) Toyota NZ have?

60km's battery only range would cover 90% of my driving, but if it is pitched in the $70k bracket the Ozzy's are right... I'd rather have a Tesla, or Ariya for that matter.

Good to see Nissan joining the modern world and watercooling their batteries. Hopefully that will trickle down to the Leaf as that would make it a decent recommendation.

Car buyers in Europe can now get their hands on a brand-new electric vehicle for less than the typical cost of a mobile-phone contract. Thanks to newly generous subsidies, some are even free.

Shoppers have swarmed virtual showrooms in Germany and France -- the region’s two largest passenger-car markets -- after their national governments boosted electric-vehicle incentives to stimulate demand. Their purchase subsidies are now among the most favorable in the world, according to BloombergNEF.

The state support is allowing Autohaus Koenig, a dealership chain with more than 50 locations across Germany, to advertise a lease for the battery-powered Renault Zoe that is entirely covered by subsidies. In the 20 days since it put the offer online, roughly 3,000 people have inquired and about 300 have signed contracts...

Electric-car sales are rising in Europe, bolstered by generous subsidies

Chancellor Angela Merkel and President Emmanuel Macron have sought to soften the coronavirus pandemic’s blow to the badly hit car sector. Sales in Europe have recovered more slowly in Europe than in China or North America, pressuring policy makers to support major sources of employment and economic activity.

In France, sales of Renault’s Zoe model are on track to double this year even as demand for gasoline vehicles has cratered. And in the Netherlands, where the city of Amsterdam is banning non-electric cars from 2030, a [NZD $174,400,000] fund to support EV purchases was used up in just eight days this month...

Generous Aid

Europe has among the largest purchase subsidies for electric cars

Germany’s subsidies of as much as [NZD $15,600] per electric vehicle have boosted sales for Carfellows, a German auto-trading website, about tenfold.

“This is a golden moment for us,” said Rainer Westdoerp, a spokesman for the Berlin-based startup, which on Wednesday will start offering leases of Daimler AG’s battery-powered Smart EQ for [NZD $17.22] a month.

Carfellows took down a similar offer for the Smart model in June after about 1,000 customers reached out within three days and the automaker couldn’t supply cars fast enough, Westdoerp said.

While the best deals -- including Carfellows’s Smart offering -- are usually for buyers of company cars because of perks including tax and risk rebates, private drivers in Germany can still lease an electric car from the site for as little as [NZD $67.85] a month. In France, where the government raised subsidies to [NZD $12,200] per car this year, customers can lease the Zoe from [NZD $79] a month.

Buyers will have to read the fine print, as some offers come with additional one-time fees or down payments. And not everyone in Europe is spending more to speed up EV adoption, with the U.K. and Belgium recently cutting aid. China had planned to end its subsidies this year but extended them to 2022 in response to the pandemic.

But in general, the picture looks attractive for European buyers as the continent is home to eight of the nine countries with the largest national purchasing-subsidies, according to BNEF.

We have CHADEMO because japan does and that where the vast majority of nz EVs come from so I wouldn't be too stressed about it.

I'll have to do some digging but the key metric I am interested in is how big the boot is. That's why I'm looking at the model y with the hatchback if I'm going to jump up to a ev with long range.
