From the examples released already it appears that all EVs get the same rebate.
Sweet. so if i buy a newly imported leaf for $8625 and register it on 1 July i get it for free?
I need to go to the dealer tomorrow ....
Good timing. I am planning to test drive a Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross PHEV tomorrow. RRP is
$49,990
So with the rebate I could get $5750 off I guess and perhaps more with some bargaining with the dealer. For me a PHEV makes sense since most of the car's driving will be within the battery's range of about 100km/day and so just charge it up every night. I would like a Model 3 but even with the rebate it's too expensive.
Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD. https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.
Dingbatt:You seem to be getting economic sense confused with ideology.🤔 Otherwise why is the rebate limited to vehicles under $80000? Don’t electric vehicles at $80000+ save emissions? Or is it a stealth ‘tax’ on the rich?

The rebate for Used Imports is $3450
There are some Leafs on Trade Me which appear to be not yet registered imports and are under 9k in price, snap them up, delay registering until 1 July, and you have some cheap Leafs.

I am disappointed that hybrids (non plug in) do not attract any form of rebate.
Not quite right, both standard hybrids and low emission petrol vehicles will pick up the rebate from 2022.

It is a flat rate, for and when vehicles are first registered here on or after 1 July.

If they didn’t limit it people would complain that it was a luxury tax break, so I think it is good they put a limit on it. Hopefully they will adjust the limit along with inflation.
So it’s a tax and not a cost neutral feebate scheme at all? Is there a luxury tax in NZ? The number of electrified vehicles that fall into the $80-100K make me wonder why they chose the arbitrary figure of $80K.
And doesn’t a $170000 iPace or eTron use just as little petrol? The ‘rich’ already pay more when they buy an expensive vehicle in the GST component.

Ultimately no, it's not. It stops new ICE vehicles from entering the fleet. Yes, newer ICE vehicles are more efficient (when they don't lie...😉) than older cars but do those improvements make up for the emissions in making the vehicle and shipping it here? Probably not.
i don't understand. we don't make EVs locally and making EVs also cost emissions. and child labour mining the rare earth material.
My quote was talking about buying a second hand ICE car that is already in NZ vs importing a new second hand ICE car.
But let's not get started on the child labour red herring. Yes, child labour is bad but most manufactures avoid sourcing cobalt from companies that deal in that trade as much as possible. Many companies are even changing their battery chemistry to avoid needing cobalt - the Model 3 that qualifies for this rebate has no cobalt in its battery. Cobalt is also used in the device you're using to browse this forum, it's quite possibly in the catalytic converter in your ICE vehicle and it was also likely used in the refining process for the petrol you use in your vehicle. Are you sure the cobalt in those processes are child labour free?

As I understand it, we already take practically all the inventory we can get.
I just looked up Japan's used EV export stats, in 2019 NZ was ~40% of sales, ( Russia was the leader at 46%), in 2020 it fell back to ~30% - likely COVID and shipping impacts).. Russia stepped and took 60%..
So yip we are a significant part of the market... but the big concern for NZ must be the lacklustre adoption of EVS in Japan
I found this article noting that Nissan sold nearly 4 times more e-power vehicles than leafs over the last 4 years, (500K vs 150K)
https://insideevs.com/news/499561/japan-nissan-500000-epower-sales/
There is also a question over the early rollout of this scheme ( from July) .. there funding does not appear to be sorted properly..they might pause the scheme and leave you stranded until it gets more funding...
"If, due to high demand, rebate funds are exhausted, Waka Kotahi will notify that the rebate window is closed and no discounts (rebates) will be offered during this time. Once we announce the scheme has restarted, only vehicles registered from the restart date will be eligible for rebates."

Is this guaranteed/spelled out clearly anywhere?
The below has been published on the labor parties Facebook page. As an example $3210 discount on a new corolla hybrid first registered after 1 Jan 2022.
I'm not sure what the exact equation is to work out the discount / fee on a particular car.

Yeah, but if you head over to Toyota, you find this
Currently, our average delivery time is on average 16 weeks, and some more popular models are taking longer due to global demand, closed borders, delayed shipping, and logistics.
Vehicles with extended delivery delays
Due to unprecedented global demand expected delivery of the vehicles below is longer than 6 months. Contact your preferred store for more information."

Car companies in NZ need extra demand like a hole in the head at the moment, about the only one that can probably increase supply down here might be Tesla..
