Your assumption that Leaf battery degradation rates applies to all EVs is incorrect.

Not assuming that at all, just commenting on the significant number of these already in NZ.

Quick check on Trademe for electric cars under $20,000 shows 475 results.
Of these 462 are Nissans.

Apologies. The price range of $50K-$80K seemed to me to indicate that you were including all EVs within the CCR cap. Most expensive Leaf is currently $69,990 less $8625 rebate, so well below the maximum you quoted.

IMO the credit for the old cells is the only way it's going to be affordable for a whole heap of people.

E: And really, the credit will be the main driver for me, I've got a 2021 car with a decent battery that I'd gladly swap for LFP that I can use regularly/abuse like any other EV (even if it is just at 50kw charging) but if the quoted price of 1/3rd a new Leaf is where they pull up then I'll need every cent to get it over the line.

I'm not questing that this be the only thing they would offer, they'd still offer buyout of your pack, but if someone was looking to install a home battery backup the battery systems can cost $15000 for less capacity than your leaf battery may have left in it. It wouldn't be for everyone but if the replacement plus converting the old pack to home storage was a package that came in under the cost of the trade in + a lower capacity home power wall I would probably be more inclined to do it to save further on my power bills. Right now I'd find swapping and selling the old pack hard to justify, but added to a solar set up there a lot more added value for those that can find the extra. It might also expand their market to those that are considering home battery backup and think they could also upgrade their vehicle at the same time.

everettpsycho: Seems a dealer in Wellington is listing the ora good cat at $49990+ORC so in line with the likes of mg and byd for a similar battery spec to those. Doesn't seem to be any details on when it's coming on their page though.

https://brendanfoot.co.nz/vehicles/ora-good-cat/

Stuff have had the actual press release on this and they are due in April. Apparently getting the standard, long range and gt models as well.

$49,990 Standard Range (48kWh)
$55,990 Long Range (64kWh)
$60,990 GT (64kWh)

In terms of $ per kWh
One can pay $10,000 for 20kWh leaf (80%SOH).

When I did the math it's still the cheapest to get a cheap Leaf.

The limitation I guess is if you need more range.

As researchers continue to debate the merits of turning old electric vehicle batteries into energy storage for renewables like solar and wind, a California startup says it has already built out a facility to do just that.
B2U Storage Solutions has reportedly deployed more than 1,300 used EV batteries at a solar facility in Lancaster, California, where it claims it is able to store more than 25 megawatt-hours of electricity, enough to supply power to a couple of hundred homes.
...
Even better for offsetting costs, B2U said its technology, which it calls EV Pack Storage (EPS), doesn't require any disassembly or reconfiguration of EV batteries to get them connected to a shipping container-sized climate-controlled storage pod, meaning batteries are essentially plug-and-play, the company claimed. B2U said batteries can be installed using their existing casings, and are managed using their existing onboard management software.

Apparently Nissan Leaf batteries are well sealed. I guess it's to be expected, since all cars are expected to drive through heavy rain and even slightly flooded areas.

So there's a good chance a written-off flood damaged Nissan Leaf's battery pack is OK.

My search of TradeMe didn't find any.

Faster than diesel? We do a battery swap on a big electric truck in NZ

Ecotricity NZ

Electric trucks take too long to recharge, right? Well, not if you swap out the batteries!

By using battery swapping, a two hour recharge has now been cut down to the same time it takes to fill up a diesel truck: five minutes! (or eight minutes, if you get in the way of the crane operator!).

Plus, with large New Zealand companies taking the technology onboard, and with new, automated systems about to hit our shores, this is only the beginning, as Gav found out when speaking to Jamie Ryan from eTrucks.

Who would pay $70K for a brand new Leaf in 2023!?

Agreed. Battery tech that hasn't really progressed in over 10 years typical of how the Japanese carmakers are lagging behind other Asian countries in particular in terms of EV market competitiveness.

Having been looking at EVs for about a year now this is a question I ask myself as well. There are options which appear better at less $$ from what I have seen.

I just can't workout what the market is for a new leaf at that price.

surely given the number of them in the market its a lot easier to derive performance metrics from them. more cars more data more accurate info for the NZ market.

ie they are a known quantity where as some of the newer cars are not so, and have quirks which havent been worked out yet

Yes, they *are* a known quantity, which is why you'd be made to buy one new: Leaf batteries die young, while the car stays pretty.

Having been looking at EVs for about a year now this is a question I ask myself as well.

Major manufacturer, available stock. Maybe doing some discounts for some buyers. As a city car I'm sure it still works very well for some people doing low kms.
