Fully English? They could do the centre console too?

Of interest to people who own NIssan LEAFs, Bluecars have received $23,100 to help develop a "trial replacement battery pack" for Gen 1 NIssan LEAFs.

Now THIS will really help boost the take up of ‘affordable’ 2nd hand EV’s for the ‘common man’ as Gen1’s currently go for around $11,000 which is in range of even my own family (1.5 school teacher incomes)

I'm wondering what the charging situation is for an ex-Japan Tesla here in NZ, they have the same proprietary Tesla port used in the US so incompatible with NZ Superchargers. I Suppose with the correct US/JPN market adapter it could use a CHAdeMO here.

Tesla cars in NZ can use the Tesla Superchargers, the Tesla destination chargers, CHAdeMo chargers with an adaptor, a convenience charger that plugs into a standard socket or a special charger that they have installed in the garage at home. This makes them the easiest EV to charge in NZ. The Tesla superchargers are about 2.5x as fast as CHAdeMO chargers.

An ex-Japan one cannot use NZ Superchargers or Destination Chargers, see above they use a different connector (proprietary Tesla connector) to Teslas designed for the Europe and NZ market (which use the more common Mennekes connector seen on many other EVs)

Only cluster and via 3-rd party who is visiting Auckland only when there are plenty of cars in stock.

If you want it in Auckland and now, Monday to Sunday flexible hours (Greenlane) - I am your only option :-).

OBD solution for the cluster Japanese to English conversion (not only Leaf) is doable in the nearest future. Prepare your wish list :-)

To convert Leaf Jap AV unit - you have to dismantle it down to PCB boards and among other things be bothered with BGA re-soldering. That is laboursome and expensive.

I have the low-spec Gen 2 with an after-market GPS/radio/head unit from OEM Audio fitted - so everything is NZ/English already on that.

The OBD update just updated the instrument cluster - which has made a huge difference TBH. So easy to adjust the charging level now, and view my energy economy.

Think it should definitely improve its re-sale value as well. Definitely worth the $180 IMO.

WHY BUY OFF AUTOLINK?
- THE ONLY DEALER TO CONVERT JAPANESE GEN 2 X AND G HEAD UNITS TO ENGLISH

I am not sure how they do this but if they can do it it cant be that difficult. But as a lot used Jap imports are sold overseas why can they not produced 'world units' from factory that can be selected by changing the setting menu it cant be that difficult at production level as the USA one have spanish/english and canadian units usually have french/english.

The Japanese leafs don't have an option for English under settings. Maybe because they were for domestic use only. Ask Nisan

Unlike petrol cars where everyone uses the same fuel, different countries use differing electrical systems. ?do any other right hand drive cars use the 110v Japanese system?

It's been amuch commented issue for a year or two and only recently have I seen anyone claiming to be able to change the language so it must be tricky. It's $180 to do this via osmi port according the Nz ev group on facebook.

UK leafs have option to change metric and imperial but I don't remember seeing language change options.

I think autolink might also be buying central console suits from scrapped UK leafs... GVI and @ruki can also change the dash unit to English (though seem to have different approaches to HOW) but apparently the Center console is far more fiddle as it links in differently somehow \_o_/

Well there is an outfit who can change the language via software update and have been driving north to south doing the programming . Was in Dunedin last weekend.

I looked at a Gen 2 G and GVI had changed the head unit to one that was entirely in English. In many ways it was quite appealing compared to the unit in my Gen 2 X which has a bunch of stuff in Japanese. But I wanted the cruise control and some other features and I haven't been finding the centre console hard to live with in my X.

My radio in the centre console has a band expander so it will tune into NZ radio stations but the frequency listed is not correct. This doesn't make a lot of difference because you can just scan through the frequencies and save the stations that you like. In my case - I get in the car and start it up, the stereo connects to my phone by bluetooth and starts playing my music via the player on my phone, the centre console does display the name of the artist and song and I can control the volume and go to the next track either with the controls in the centre or the controls on my steering wheel.

On the converted console in the G models: You can plug the phone into the USB socket and have the display mirrored on the centre display, great for showing the navigation maps! You could play movies on that screen or whatever. Very nice, but I'd still rather have my X over the G.

I have posted about that method on few occasions. It is not "conversion" of an AV unit, it is a swap for a donor from USA or UK. Bear in mind folks - you have to source BOTH rows of buttons WITH the donor as CAN bus is in the different row in USA one.

Today's timing for those interested - physical out+in of the cluster ~10 minutes; Jap to English conversion: 60minutes instead of previous 45. The reason for delay investigating evidence of that cluster been "touched" before, soldering was not original from the factory and non-standard markings left in it. Mileage after conversion stays as it was, no change. Extra service provided: education about Li batteries balancing and erasing of numerous error codes (aka DTC) - most likely caused by the car has been repaired before it was sold to the customer. DTCs were related to multiple systems: e.g.BCM, Brakes, Charge, AV unit. FYI - you can not clear DTC with LeafSpy lite. You can do it with PRO version or Dealership Grade scanner. I have both.

Do you end up with working SatNav?

I'm not sure if it would be worth doing, but I'd love to know my options here. My dash is already converted to English (I bought the car from GVI).

Folks, over-quoting is not cool.

There is no "second hand price list for wrecked Leaf AV units". If you lucky to get one - I can swap it for you. You need to have budget around $1000NZD+ = for wrecked device from overseas + shipment to NZ + GST + Customs Fees. And you need to be 100% sure the SD card is present. If not add around $400. And no maps for New Zealand yet.

I wasted a lot of time hunting for those in USA & lost interest as there are no buyers locally.

Dealers are doing it themselves only and when client demand English AV unit [passing the cost onto end user].

Majority seems to be happy with Google Translate. Which is not working well with every smartphone (if you have one). Some messages appear and gone so fast on the screen - you would not be able to prepare translator for that. When driving - no way.

Yeah probably not worth it. Really I've already got everything working that needs to work, the great guys at GVI put some work in and they helped me pair up my phone with bluetooth - I can play music, answer calls, etc.

Overall my 2015 X 24kWh Leaf is a really good car and does everything I need or want (except more battery capacity would be great, but that would cost much more than another $1,000).
