Well, if I was buying NZ new I'd probably wait to check out the 2018 Leaf considering how expensive the Ioniq is. But if there was a 40kWh 2018 Ioniq being released then it would make sense to compare both of them. Unfortunately I can't afford to buy either car.

Don't hold your breath for Leaf prices as NZ new. The ones being sold in NZ are imports that has been subsidised elsewhere. They were trying to sell a fairly basic version of the Leaf in NZ for around $60,000 if memory serves me...

So... went to charge today at the Puki CHaDeMO QC charger (arriving with 7kms on the flashing ‘GoM’ and put in only 13KWh (as reported by the charger) to end up at 88%???

For the charger to say 80ish percent of my 11 bar leaf to be only 13KWh seems really strange to me... do leafs maybe have a battery memory that mine seems to think it’s almost empty when it is not? Or almost full when there is only 60%?

Have you got any data from leafspy? Another possibility is that you're about to lose a bar.

I don't know what the new LEAF is going to do for charging. I would think CHAdeMO is virtually guaranteed. What level of AC charging might be possible is not known. It is hope that type 2 / 22kw will be available for Europe, at least.....and we would see that in any UK LEAFs that made their way here, I suppose, if were to go that way. But this is just speculation.

There may be new info I'm not aware of.....I've been busy the past few days working in Western Australia and offline for most of every day.

Have you got a Gen 1 LEAF? Must be. 33 minutes is a very long time for 12.9kWh of charge. My 30kWh LEAF does that in half the time.

What did your LEAF say when you turned it on?

A 11bar 24kWh LEAF will have about 78% to 84% SoH. Let's say 80%. That would be 17.6kWh of the original 22.1kWh usable 'perfect' capacity of the 24kWh. You took on 13kWh of the (about) 17.6 possible......and the Charge.net chargers stop at what they think is 95% of the a full pattery......so that's about 16.97 of 17.6 (again, assuming 80% SoH).

You're not far off. You could only charge about 3kWh more at the most......

Did you unplug and try again? Putting the charging cable back into the charger "holster" resets the charger......(in case you didn't know).

yep, Gen 1 leaf "11 bars" that leafspy puts at 81%SoH. I wasnt worried about the time, just confused about the 13KWh being 88% SoC...

I will try reset the charger again next time, but was by then hurrying off to collect my 8YO from sport so had to dash.

Hi all,

I've been reading a lot of this thread with great interest as a bit of a windfall has meant that I could be a responsible fellow and look into getting an EV. I'm rather interested in the leaf (unsurprisingly) after seeing how low priced those 2011-2012 models are. After reading through it doesn't seem worthwhile to actually go down that track.

I'm located in Christchurch and have been looking on TradeMe and it just doesn't help that the prices fluctuate even within the same dealership. I'm not entirely sure what I actually want but I have a small family of four (my wife, myself, a 3 year old and a 9 month old) and we like to visit family in Oxford quite frequently (once every week almost).
My family in Oxford have just bought an Ioniq and are loving it, I imagine having the range of a 30X could be quite good but we don't really do enormous drives very often and will actually still be holding onto the petrol car for those long ones.

I personally love all this move to electric as I got myself a bike with an 8fun electric kit chucked onto it, it's a blast to ride on.

All this preamble aside I'm just looking for general advice especially in the Christchurch area, oh and if wanted to use the charger that my family in Oxford has installed (one of these https://emotorwerks.com/store/residential/juicebox-pro-40-smart-40-amp-evse-with-24-foot-cable) what would be involved for a leaf?

According to Google Maps Oxford is only 55kms from Christchurch, that is pretty easy to do in a Nissan Leaf.

For charging - if you are visiting for a few hours then you could just as easily plug into a standard power socket and charge plenty enough to get back home again, in fact a couple of hours of charging would probably do the job with a comfortable margin. If their charger works that is fine but I really can't see why it would matter if you had to plug in your own EVSE cable to a standard outlet.

For the car - can you afford to go to a 2014 or 2015 Leaf? That would get you a Gen 2 which has some advantages including more boot space. I am really enjoying my 2015 Leaf X with the cruise control and enough range for the driving I typically do. Maybe you need to get yourself to a dealership and take a test drive or two.

Around a city like Christchurch you will absolutely LOVE how a Leaf drives, they are so good in stop start driving with plenty of power there right from 0 kph.

The NZ Ioniqs seem to have a type 2 plug, whereas that EVSE says it has a type 1. The LEAF has a type 1, so all you need to do is check which plug type their car has.

I'm looking at options to replace my drive to work car and my commute is 60km each way on the open road. There are no charging stations at my work, nor on the route home. So it would have to be able to drive to work and home (120km open road driving, no stop start) before charging.

It is definitely possible, but you either want 30kWh or watch your speed.

At 110kph on the speedo (not 110kph actual speed) I only get around 100km of driving on a charge with my 24kWh Leaf. This is OK because Home => Work => Home is only 70km.

At 100kph on the speedo I'd probably get 120km and at 90kph I'd defintely get 120km with range to spare.

No option to run an extension cord to a power socket at work?

At work the boss provides charging for my EV. By that I mean there is a standard power socket and I have an extension lead and my EVSE with me.

Thanks for the reply! I really do need to try one out, I just don't know which dealership is the best to check out. I think we could look at the 2014 or 2015, we're not worried about having a Japanese radio etc and could look at an X (it sounds like B Mode is pretty amazing and a heat pump over resistance also sounds good).

They are using a Type 2 plug, so I would need an adapter cord, which go for about $300. But would any leaf benefit from that charger or only if they have the 6.6kw option?

I’d say The above accurately answers your question. Something to consider though is that over time your range will decrease (1-3years?) and a 2011/12 Gen1 Leaf will already have lost at least 10-20% of its range so will probably only ‘just’ do that distance. Hills and speed count a lot too, so if it’s a hilly/windy route you definitely need a charge along the way.

Perhaps post your route end points here or use Greenrace http://www.jurassictest.ch/GR/ to try plot your path as it also accounts for hills...?
