Batman:
MileHighKiwi: Who decides what an appropriate use for something is? I'm doing a large landscaping project and yesterday had 12 guys on site, most in utes. We had a good laugh when I joked about them having to buy an EV. We live on a hill with a steep and curved driveway. A builder reversed a huge trailer up our drive loaded to the rafters with builders mix, timber and tools. His massive Hilux struggled.....no chance in a yet to be developed ev ute!

Useless engine. Bmw diesels have 240kw and 700nm torque.

Same price as the Hilux?

I'll tell the lads they need to upgrade their Isuzu's, Hilux's and Navara's and buy a BMW ute. Lol. My job just doubled in price!

Without looking, I'm guessing the Amarok will do. Let me check...

EVs have better torque low down than ICEVs. I expect an EV would have no problem pulling (pushing) heavy loads uphill at low speeds.

Many of the EV utes on the way are going to be better suited for that than the struggling Hilux, especially those companies that exploit the electric side of it. Taking Rivian as an example, their top spec ute will have a motor for each wheel so not only does that give it better 4x4 capabilities but it also gives it instant 1100NM torque, compared to 500 for the Hilux. It's also 700hp vs 150hp for the Hilux, and has a tow rating of up to 5000kg vs 3500kg for the Hilux.

No, they're not in NZ yet (except for the sample model from last week) but they're starting deliveries in North America next month.

That thing can also turn around on itself without needing to reverse! Do they make SUVs?

They do

That looks altogether too happy.

I'd be tempted to paint a grille on it and possibly some angry eyebrows.

I'm not buying that thing. I'll drive it if it's free but I'm not buying something that looks like that.

Nah, it's fine the way it is. I don't imagine they're going to have any issues selling out.

I was thinking more like Wu Ling Mini EV. Kind of a 4-seater EV smart car for about US$4500.  :-) The range is about 100km with the big (13.9 kWh) battery. It's the fastest selling EV in China in 2021.

170km in fact. Sell like hotcakes here

I think I like it as the car suited for my sister and mother.

Problem is its left hand drive and i doubt the chinese safety standards would pass here. Similar to how many of the Tata / indian cheap EV cars dont make it to america.

They would need to produce a special right hand drive and improved safety model for the NZ/AUS market.

Edit: looks like they are making one for Europe called the Zoggy. Dont think if its left hand drive though.

Rikkitic:

One thing I have never understood is why rural posties are made to drive right-hand vehicles. The one that serves our very long country road is forced to weave back and forth all the way out, often driving in the wrong lane. I know in America, at least in the past, rural posties had vehicles with the steering on the same side as mailboxes. It is much easier and much safer. Is there a reason we don't do that or is it just stupidity?

Most routes take the rural postie in a loop. They dont drive up one side of the road and back down the other side. Instead they take a completely different road to come home. So they zigzag across the road as they pass each house.

Half the mailboxes are on the left side of the vehicle and half are on the right side anyway.

Rural subdivisions are now having their mailboxes in groups at the entrance so the driver doesnt need to enter the subdivision.

And the cost of the car - because the owner of the route is a subcontractor, they own their own cars and the added cost of importing a left-hand drive car probably isnt worth it.
