Now that the cycle thread is locked, maybe it is time to start on utes and SUVs. According to this, most utes aren't even used for work purposes. Farmers may not like subsidising electric vehicles, but it is a question how many utes actually are farm vehicles these days.

Ute popularity is a market distortion caused by tax deductibility on utes. Double-cab utes are the standard thing for tradies & farmers to buy to use for carting their families around. After all, it would be difficult for a farmer to justify a double-cab for use on the farm. But he doesn't have to -- so long as it's a ute, it's deductible. Park outside any country school at pickup/dropoff time and you'll see them all.

I guess a tradie could justify a double-cab as needed for those occasions when he had 4 people to transport somewhere, but again, commonly used as a family vehicle.

I have an Avensis station wagon with all my gear in the back as my work vehicle.

Recently had to drive from Christchurch to Hakataramea to do a job that required a 4wd to reach the job site. 600km round trip.

I borrowed one of the company's Ford Rangers.

I was most impressed with it and can understand why many people choose them as the family car. All the toys, comfortable to drive, heaps of room in the canopy, and with the added bonus of a bit of extra height.

Pretty sure there isn't currently an EV that would have been suitable for this day trip?

Also don't think utes are made for farmers, but for anyone who wants to buy one. I know electrians, doctors, teachers who all have utes.

Farmers have families too.

And you can't really take the John Deere up the motorway.

I love my UTE. I'm not a farmer. To me it's practical to own a UTE. I can chuck 5 bikes at the back on the weekends to the mountain bike track...

I was imagining a large mass travelling 1000's Km per hour into our solar system towards earth.
It closed in on earth and astronomers were astounded !
A tangled conglomeration of double cab utes held together by the gravity of their mass.

After we fired a Tesla at their peace mission to Earth, Aliens decided to reply in kind.

There is no accounting for some sentient beings sense of humor and irony.

It is all about distraction and taking peoples minds away from NZs real problems. Housing, child poverty etc, which they can't solve

Trucks produce far more pollution than utes, as do some of these SUVs. We used to have a ute and it didn't use any more fuel than an SUV. Infact it was cheaper to run.
