I think you are being close-minded about this, which of course is your good right, but how can you know that something has no value to you if you never try it? Speaking another language - any language - does have value, and it makes sense to add a few Maori words to your vocabulary because that is a language that is already spoken here and has also worked its way into New Zealand English. I don't understand the aversion to it.

It's a plain and simple case of some perceived superiority for belonging to the majority and not wanting to be bothered by something that one has no interest in, nevermind the notion of showing some respect for the indigenous culture or just appreciating (note: not embracing -- I am sure you understand the difference but your average illiterate Kiwi probably does not) a culture that is unique to NZ. The good news is that people like Pumpedd tend to be closer to death than being young -- the world will eventually have less of these types of people.

Quite frankly many of your posts are down right inflammatory showing no respect for a person with a point of view that you don't like. You do make some good points at times but you can't seem to stop being confrontational or rude.

You're showing your own perceived superiority when you say your average illiterate Kiwi

I don't know what age Pumpedd is. No matter a persons ago or point of view or age I find this sort statement to be unacceptable. The good news is that people like Pumpedd tend to be closer to death than being young -- the world will eventually have less of these types of people.

You are being immature and offensive now. I clearly said I have no use for the language but others do. I guess you are suggesting I will die soon which is also totally unacceptable. You are being more inflammatory than any other person here.

It wasn't technofreck that was making the suggestions

You're welcome to your view. I simply see no value in beating around the bush and denying the obvious empirical observation that those who refuse to see the value of minority culture/language tend to be closer to dying than being young.

Some of the comments surprise me.  I'm kind of old.

I don't personally think from my own observation over the years that there's a strong correlation between age and intolerance.  If I meet an intolerant old racist - I'm sure that they would have once been an intolerant young racist.  Some old people may be stubborn and have fixed views and can be less receptive to change, but those fixed views were formed long ago - not something which suddenly formed when they passed their XXth birthday.

Sometimes acquaintances of similar age mortify me with things they say, but so do some young people.  In fact, if there's any trend, I'd suggest that many people of my age were brought up in times when our country was more proudly egalitarian (as a concept - if not in reality), albeit while simultaneously being far less enlightened on cultural issues.

I'm not confident at all that narrow minded (and racist) views will die out, racism is still alive and well in NZ with young people.

Grow up and give it a rest dude.

There has always been racism and always will be. Its the way we are designed, some may call it a flaw others may call it something else. Just like we all have our views and usually express them in a mature way. We will never all have the same views..never.

Racism is a consequence of upbringing. No one is born a racist.

I'm not sure people refuse to see the value in things.  They simply don't perceive the same value you do.

For example you 'see no value in beating around the bush', where others might see value in doing so.

Value is an arbitrary social construct, and relies on the perception of valuers.

Even when the value of something can be quantified (e.g. priced), it is perceived as more or less valuable by different people.

BTW your 'obvious empirical observation' doesn't include any data.

You can just open up any kind of social attitude survey and note the correlation between age and socially conservative attitudes, including lower concern for minority rights. But let's just keep playing games instead!

Yes - but please don't stereotype.  As I mentioned, I'm now relatively old.  I'm well aware that many of my contemporaries have shockingly conservative views, but also well aware that all of the people my own age I call friends are as liberal/progressive as I am.  Most pleasing is that some with conservative views can change.

As a general observation on Maori issues, my wife has a statistician/analyst working for her.  His latest revelation from looking at official data is that long term earning stats for Maori with degree level qualifications is that they earn 25% less than NZ European with exactly the same qualification.  I don't think that's OK.

According to one of my brothers in law (much younger than me), income disparity is explained by what he describes as the "fact" that Maori and Pasifika people are "happy" to earn minimum wage, and usually don't aspire for more. When I suggested that might be somewhat racist, he danced around the room loudly pronouncing that I'd accused him of being a racist, and that as he had Maori friends he was the least racist person you could ever hope to meet.  This in 2018.  In NZ.  FFS.

I am not sure why/what I detest matters so much to you. But for interest's sake, I can actually say that one of the things that I detest the most are silly one-liners.
