@FineWine COBOL is still around, in use by thousands of institutions around the world. So much so that Cloudflare just make COBOL available at the edge of the CDN, on their serverless platform: "Cloudflare Workers Now Support COBOL"

 

Nothing wrong with COBOL actually. I still think it's a language with much more elegance than some more modern stuff.

With such a long list of misdeeds, I can only reach one conclusion.

There's a sentient Covid-19 collective who crawled into Trump's ear. It's has been eating his brain, and using him like a puppet.

Even for the microscopic parasite, there's very little of Trump's brains to eat, so it'll need to escape through the largest orifice. Conveniently for the sentient Covid-19 collective that's his big mouth.

My hypothesis has to be correct, because nothing human would be making the same decisions.

Thanks, Yes I now understand it is still used within Banks, Governments etc. But it sort of got drowned out by Pascal, C & variants, Java, cocoa, swift, due to MS & Apple. In the mid 80's I sort of learnt Basic so I could computerise my 10 pin bowling league scoring and standings when I was a league secretary. Now days I can get around HTML & CSS. But I still can't get my head around a 'dangling participle' let alone a multi-paradigm object-orientate computer language.

 

So is COBOL easy to integrate with today's languages and hardware ?? Or do you need a translator type language in-between ?? I only ask because why would the US be having so much problem ?




Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

A friend in NY working on this says COBOL is being scapegoated to avoid having to deal with the real issue, the broken and dysfunctional US welfare and tax authorities. He claims it's not the computing side that's the problem but the dysfunctional system it has to operate with.

 

 

Disclaimer: He's not exactly non-partisan in this debate, but having experienced both the IRS and SSA first-hand I'm not surprised by his comment.

In an interview with CBS’s Face the Nation, Treasury Secretary/Cruella de Vil’s less charismatic brother Steve Mnuchin discussed the government’s $2 trillion relief package that Congress passed in March. Among the relief package is bailouts for corporations (obviously), a small business relief loan program worth $350 billion (which ran out of funds in just two weeks), and the “bridge liquidity” that some individuals are receiving, which amounts to $1,200 per person (at most), plus extra for dependent children.

In the clip below, the public servant/producer of Suicide Squad (really), who himself is worth upwards of $400 million, tells us that the stimulus checks worth $1,200 should be enough to last Americans for 10 weeks. He said, “I think the entire package provides economic relief overall for about 10 weeks … Hopefully we will kill this virus quicker and we won’t need it, but we have liquidity to put into the American economy to support American workers and American business.”

According to Abodo.com, “the national median rent for one-bedrooms rose 4.1 percent, ending the year at $1,078. Rents for two-bedroom apartments stood at $1,343.”

All computer languages are equally rubbish at dealing with flatly contradictory requirements.

There is Object Orientated Cobol that runs with Microsofts .Net so can integrate with any of the languages .Net supports. It was always abstracted from the hardware, as any modern language is, so that's not really an issue.

 

I think I'll start contracting again. I spent the first 25 years of my career with Cobol and Assembler so should make a killing. No reason not to exploit a terrible situation for ones own personal gain. OMG I'm starting to sound like HIM!!!!!

i watched today's briefing at ~9am. white house is wanting to reopen the country and saying their current situation is no worse than the flu? i only watched about 10 mins but think that's what trump and dr birx said (didn't see fauci). can't find it printed anywhere though. search nbc news they have the whole feed, about 40 mins in.

He said 10 weeks in the context of the overall federal response package, not just a $1200 cheque, so including the small business payouts, similar to NZ has
