It depends. The rest of the "free world" has typically slavishly followed what the US wanted even when it was obviously not a good idea, like some sort of dependent druggie, and questioning that was quite difficult. Now that what they're doing is becoming unquestionably bad for even the most ardent follow-the-US conservative, it'll be easier for the rest of the world to ignore them. And about time.

Agree. Imo this isn't really true. It's a combination of bullsh1t and hypocrisy. You can bet all of these people send/help their daughters to go out of state to obtain these services, after abstinence only education has failed or other circumstances arise. It's a policy for other people, and costs virtually nothing. Laughing all the way to the bank..

US society demands fresh uneducated meat from flyover states, to feed into the forever perpetual endless wars that the corporate defense businesses shareholders demand

Society also needs poor people committing crimes, so they can be fed into the prison-insustrial complex that Biden championed. Vast numbers of profit prisons exist in remote locations, that literally could not support the towns, if new prisoners weren’t being incarcerated.

By putting yet another Republican in the Supreme Court, Trump is just hedging his bets that they'll choose his way if he loses.

 

Then again, what if Biden wins by a very large landslide?

 

Who am I kidding, of course Trump will bang on about it forever and take him to court.

She will have been appointed by an impeached president who lost the popular vote in 2016 and may well continue in office after losing it again in 2020.

 

She will almost certainly be approved by senators representing less than 45 percent of the American population.

 

Our nation is moving even deeper into minority rule: The House aside, the U.S. government is controlled by the less popular party in a polarized two-party system. 

 

We may call this unfair, but that would trivialize the problem. It is entirely permissible under the Constitution, and it is dangerous. 

 

The tendency toward minority rule in the United States, present since the founding, has become more acute. 

 

That’s certainly true in the Senate: California has 68 times as many residents that Wyoming has, but the same number of senators.  ...

 

Residents of rural, sparsely populated states are vastly over-represented in the Senate. 

 

And because the electoral college is based on the number of federal representatives, this rural-state over-representation plays out in the selection of presidents, as well. ...

 

On its own, a rural state bias in representation is potentially problematic but not invidious. ...

 

But the problems mount when one party dominates the rural areas and the other dominates the urban ones, which is where we stand today.

 

Republicans essentially get bonus points: They can be the less popular party and still get to govern.

It's all in the Senate's hands right now, which is a bad thing.

Democrats have accused Republicans of hypocrisy in moving forward with a replacement for Ginsburg, who died last week with only 45 days before the November vote. In 2016, Republicans blocked President Barack Obama's Supreme Court nominee, Judge Merrick Garland, after Scalia's death more than 200 days before the election.

Republicans planned to hold four days of nationally televised public hearings the week of Oct. 12, aiming for a vote on the Senate floor by late October, just days before the election.

“We have been really clear as Republicans throughout that we think the biggest impact a president can have long term, over many, many decades is who they put on the Supreme Court and other federal courts,” Senator John Barasso of Wyoming, the No. 3 Senate Republican, said in an interview.

Pros: If this were to happen, at least 4 states would seceded: California, New York, Washington (state, not DC), and Oregon.

If this minimal number seceded, that's over 1/4 of the US GDP. California alone has more GDP than most countries.

If the Northeast seceded with the West Coast, that's 41.2% of the GDP.

Texas is 8.8% of the GDP. If they were to become their own country, as is often threatened, that means the remaining 35 back-water states would be left with 50% of their GDP

Cons: most nukes sit in the lightly populated mid-West.

Side Effect: A side effect would be it would devastate the remaining states tax base. For all of conservatives complaining, These four states taxes subsidize the rest of the country.

Many US military bases, and operations would cease, or be severely curtailed.

Legality: Secession is not impossible; it's "extra-legal" like most coupes. If a territory does it, and gets away with it, then it's legal. If it fails, it's illegal.

The Times obtained Donald Trump’s tax information extending over more than two decades, revealing struggling properties, vast write-offs, an audit battle and hundreds of millions in debt coming due.

 

Donald J. Trump paid $750 in federal income taxes the year he won the presidency. In his first year in the White House, he paid another $750.

 

He had paid no income taxes at all in 10 of the previous 15 years - largely because he reported losing much more money than he made.

 

As the president wages a re-election campaign that polls say he is in danger of losing, his finances are under stress, beset by losses and hundreds of millions of dollars in debt coming due that he has personally guaranteed. 

 

Also hanging over him is a decade-long audit battle with the Internal Revenue Service over the legitimacy of a $72.9 million tax refund that he claimed, and received, after declaring huge losses. An adverse ruling could cost him more than $100 million.

 

The tax returns that Mr. Trump has long fought to keep private tell a story fundamentally different from the one he has sold to the American public. 

 

His reports to the I.R.S. portray a businessman who takes in hundreds of millions of dollars a year yet racks up chronic losses that he aggressively employs to avoid paying taxes.

  •     As president, he has received more money from foreign sources and U.S. interest groups than previously known. The records do not reveal any previously unreported connections to Russia.

I see a delicious irony looming: The unprincipled hypocritical evangelicals, who have held their noses and supported Trump as a useful idiot, may now throw him under the bus as he has served his purpose and appointed the judges they wanted. The thought of Trump being the one thrown under the bus delights me.
