DPRK this morning had a test failure of a missile, reported as exploding shortly after launch.
This presumed to be a SLBM (Submarine Launched Ballistic Missile), possibly a Pukguksong-1
Presumably - had the test been a success - this would have been KJU's "big news".

Rikkitic:

North Korean officials seem to be genuinely paranoid. They appear to believe, with some justification, that America wants to invade them. They are convinced that their only guarantee of survival is to possess sufficient military might to make any invasion attempt too costly to contemplate. They see nukes as the great equaliser. As long as they feel safe, they are not necessarily overly dangerous. They are still crazy, to be sure, and they will do crazy things like kidnap foreigners in their own countries and execute political prisoners with anti-aircraft guns and carry out assassinations overseas, but they probably won't march on South Korea.

The key to containing North Korea until the leadership hopefully implodes of its own accord, is to not upset the status quo. If they don't feel threatened, they won't threaten others, except with words. Yet along comes a US president making threats and showing force and blowing things up. How do you think that is going to affect someone who is already paranoid? You don't talk a nut job with a gun down by threatening them with a bigger gun. It doesn't matter that you have a bigger gun. Bluster and threats are not the way to get results in a situation like this.

NK officials are acting under the direct orders of the establishment (=KJU).

What the establishment (KJU) believes - who knows. He was brought up in Switzerland and then "educated" in a NK University. So whether he has insight into world politics - who knows. But I'd say he has no insight into the plight of his people - whom he sees as commodity that he owns.

I would be watching to see if the United States send more navy fleets or not. Right now, you get the media hyping up about bombers in Guam, and the Carl Vinson fleet. I would suspect its purely moves out of the geopolitical handbook, same with the MOAB, same with Trumps tweets. I think the Syria attack conveniently co-insides with all this DPRK stuff. The bombers in Guam have been there for ages. The Carl Vinson Fleet was there last month. Its a very different situation. I suspect a military strike is a plan B/C. It is not really a good option. South Korea knows this, Japan knows this and the USA as well. And certainly China is not keen to have a war on their doorstep.

I think right now they are getting China to squeeze them. I think they are using Trump's personality and unpredictability to the administrations advantage, it seems they got really upset about his tweets. But the policy towards DPRK has remained the same. This has not been effective in the past, but I think they can probably make it have an effect. The DPRK have effectively ran out of countries to turn to for help. Japan is very cross, South Korea is very cross, and they are starting to frustrate China.

Its up to the elite in DPRK to turn the reigeme inside out. Its too hard to speculate what its like. But some of them have defected already. If these numbers start to increase, you may see it all falling apart.

When NK test missiles into ocean = bad.

When Russia test missiles hitting MH = bad.

When the US test missiles = awesome.

North Korea has achieved the impossible. KJU actually makes the Donald look good by comparison. I wonder if his strategy is to eat the USA under the table. At the rate he is expanding, he will either be dead or unable to waddle by the end of the year.

Trumps bluster is nothing on this topic, it's all KJU who blusters and breaks the rules. He is the only one who is wrong. You would probably find that his actions are for his own power.

I don't think the elite can do anything. You have to have his picture in your house and I think every room and they have people watching for anti comments. Nothing changes. Right now they have more weapons and sanctions will increase and from chine as well. He has gone too far, so he will be starved out. That may well bring an uprising but a long way off

Nothing the US has done or said is new nor is if serious . The POTUS could be anybody. Few years back it was an act of war. In this topic the bluster and actions are from one side. But it's clouded by anti trump sentiment. If this was Obama or snyonerise it becomes second tier news as it's all happened before.

Are you mocking his weight problem? Don't worry, if he eats too much just pay a plastic surgeon fly them (and his operating team) into NK and do some plastic surgery. I'm sure that's his plan, just hasn't executed it or found the right surgeon.

Expensive when a 30 cent .223 round would achieve the same outcome!

gzt: Part of a policy group announcement Friday:

NZHerald (AP Wire) But a U.S. military official, who requested anonymity to discuss planning, said the U.S. doesn't intend to use military force against North Korea in response to either a nuclear test or a missile launch. The official said plans could change in the unlikely event a North Korean missile targets South Korea, Japan or U.S. territory.

The timing of the policy announcement seems designed to reduce tension.

That has always been the policy, official or unofficial. The only thing that has changed is the old rant to get oil and food is fading. more pressure goes to PRNK. I can see PRNK acting bad, but silently hoping China brokers a deal. I'd hope that the US cuts off all trade with PRNK, and advises that while it will reduce the so called acts of aggression touted by KJU, the US will shoot any missiles that leave their waters or borders, and that it has no official intention to strike pre-emptively. Cards on the table.

Pres B.Clinton had a deal with NK for an exchange in exchange for halting nuclear development. It was working as designed, until Republican Party disruption effectively scuppered that outcome. After that, NK decided progress in nuclear and military development was the only way forward to guarantee security.

Imo USA should have officially ended the Korean war anywhere between 50 and 20 years ago. NK would not have pursued a nuclear path and it would be more like Vietnam or China today.

There is still time to restart that process. The current course of USA benefits absolutely no one.
