gzt:tdgeek:gzt: South Korean presidential candidates. It is well known that Moon Jae-in has said a visit to North Korea will be his top priority. Now the second leading candidate Ahn Cheol-soo has announced his support for resuming the six party talks ended after a North Korean satellite launch in 2009.
Over these years there have been many statements and indications from North Korea that it seeks a resumption in talks.
It is looking like South Korea will again and as usual support a resumption of talks no matter which candidate wins the election. At least four of the other six parties will readily agree. Add Japan and that is five. Japan is usually positive about these talks.
I don't think anyone disputes the desire for talks. Talks for NK desired unification as has been stated will not happen.
Perhaps talks to stop NK nuclear and missile tests in exchange for oil and food, refused sanctions, that is likely as it has happened a lot in the past.
Both parties desire reunification. It is the terms that are tricky. There is a huge amount of common ground. Talking is important. The reunification talks have had good outcomes like the family reunions. Although the outcome of a reunited independent Korea is many years away, it is logical that both governments will resume those talks.
KJU does want a better economic result. That gives a very small possibility of unification. But he is a dictator, and a ruthless one who uses ruthless deeds to keep everyone scared. There can be no unification as he cannot rule. So forget unification and think peaceful coexistence. Even then he will lose control when his people flee to SK, not that many of them realize they are being played. But that will leak. He will want economic freedom and ruthless control of his people who cannot flee and ideally can stay in their "protective" bubble. The factors cannot really coexist.
Best he allows himself to accept that no one is interested in invading his country, so he can begin running it for his people. Rather than using that as an excuse.
