Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.
NO

I certainly expected him to win the next election and then stand down with a year or so afterwards.
It's been interesting to hear all the lefties say it's Andrew Little's best Xmas present but I beg to differ. Labour won't win with Little as leader but nobody was going to challenge before an election that they were going to lose. My pick is early next year he'll be rolled.
I was extremely surprised he got made leader in the first place honestly.
One can hope and Grant Robertson given the job with Jacinda Arderne deputy leader
What is having them as leader and deputy going to achieve? The policies will still be the same, and the reason people didn't vote for the party in the last election, was because of their policies. People don't really want new taxes, and the people who have been locked out of housing, want some major changes to housing policies, not just minor tweaking. Although Little is like an unflavoured instant pudding, he seems very capable and has a lot of experience, and you get the impression he could be quite a good leader. Labour though seems quite a fragmented party compared to National, and now it is a Labour / Green merge,. National though IMO have been in for too long and seem to have run out of ideas.. At this point in time, I would really struggle to know who I should vote for, as the options aren't good IMO.
History does not bode well for PM appointees to be elected PM. The last one was Holyoake who was appointed in '57, lost the '57 election, but went on to win in 1960.
I'm slightly surprised therefore to see this commented on as "well planned move". Especially as it's obviously caught Bill E by surprise - even though he's admitted that Key had mentioned the possibility of resigning to him months ago.

Or that John Key is the witch?
Definitely the witch.
Winston for PM!

Kind of surprised the PM is allowed to give next to no notice period on resigning.
MikeB4: I believe John Key brought many votes to National, things will change with him gone and using a phrase used by labour in the past, Norman Kirk campaign..... "time for a change" and I think many New Zealanders will think that after three terms of National.
Could be similar to the Gordon Brown / Tony Blair power transfer in that regards.

Isn't that covered ion the terms of being a politician. But I think he is saying on , probably as a back bencher, until the next election.

Interesting (well I think it is, a bit) to compare the comments in this discussion with the comments under the relevant article in The Guardian - much more of the good riddance there.
Can't say I'll miss him.
Yes, but the Guardian is a form of self-selection for the State to identify undesirables...!

It could be a good oportunity for some superannuation reform. JK promised not to change it while he was PM, and respect to him for keeping his promise, but it's becoming increasingly obvious that change is needed or it'll become unaffordable.
Also a good opportunity for a National-WinstonFirst coalition? That would spoil Labour's whole day
On request, added a poll Who will be our next Prime Minister here.

MikeB4: Hon Paula Bennett is a good possibilty
The problem is she's probably even more polarizing than Key.
