The nutters are another matter. Religious fanaticism is just another form of craziness. I don't know if it has made it into the DSM yet, but it should have.

There will always be predators. These are simply people without principles out to make an easy dollar. I am a lot more bothered by the crazies who follow them. True fanaticism is scary stuff.

The problem isn't Religion, it's extremism and a lack of tolerance. If it wasn't Religion, it would be something else.

You can't blame Religion for this type of behaviour.

Tolerance needs to be taught at schools.

I think this is both right and wrong. Most religions preach tolerance and many religious people live exemplary lives, but many also latch onto religion as an excuse to control the behaviour of others and to punish those they don't approve of. Religion seems to facilitate the slide into fanaticism. When you see hysterical mobs baying for blood, they almost always use religion as a cloak. I have come to the personal conclusion that religion does more harm than good, though I don't question that it also does do some good. But it just makes things too easy for the weak-minded and those who wish to exploit them.

Some religious types are protesting the removal of Jesus from the parliamentary prayer. I would like to organise a protest to remove the prayer altogether. It is time we grew up. Surely we can run our own affairs without begging some minority god for approval?

Conservative religious views are not confined to the political right.

I've linked to a dated example below, but it relates to a sizeable demographic that largely votes left and is religiously conservative. there has been plenty of other commentary on the issue.

Sure it is not a righ-only thing, but it seems to concentrate on that part of the spectrum, especially in the USA.

There are politicians on the left with religious conservative views but you rarely hear about that because it generally isn't 'on message'.

I don't have that information at hand and can't really be bothered looking for it, but I do know that every time a 'progressive' policy is mentioned that might actually make a real difference, conservative religious right crazy stupid people like Bob McCoskrie start bleating about how it will undermine family values, whatever those are. Latest example: the police minister Stuart Nash wants to formalise drug testing at music festivals here. Overseas experience has conclusively demonstrated that this is effective and protects young people from harm by screening out bad drugs laced with poisons. So of course predictable Bob starts crying that this will legitimise and promote drug use amongst our precious youth.

Gee Bob, who would have thought that all the kiddies will otherwise just stay home reading their bibles? What a revelation. It must be divine.

Crying all the way to the bank, his constituency is a prohibition oriented constituency. There are political points/donations in it for him.

If he was a leftie and felt that way, he would have nothing to gain. So he would keep quiet and vote 'nay' or abstain on any related conscience vote.

Fundamentalists also ascribe to a particularly self-serving belief that the rich and privileged are blessed by god and their favoured position in life is proof of their moral superiority and hence their entitlement to be rich and privileged. Somehow, the message of Jesus has got lost in this. Of course, the other side of it is that there is no compulsion to help poor people because the fact that they are poor is proof that they have sinned so they deserve what they get. If they just repent and pray harder all will be hunky-dory so the better off do not need to give them a hand up! Snakes alive! What a revelation!
