Varkk:

They possibly still have some investment or similar here in NZ generating taxable income. Somehow that was flagged incorrectly as wages and salary income.

I dunno - once you leave, the only tax that should apply is NRWT, and you're not even required to have an IRD number for that since it's just "default withholding".

Actually, rental income might be applicable, or would that be taxed at destination instead of source?

I can say I certainly haven't received a letter from IRD, so they're certainly not just blindly paying everyone.

Pity, I could do with a cost of living payment right about now 😂

I didn't get it, I earn just over the threshold. Had no idea I was somehow "well-off" now, guess I missed that meeting 😆

Similarly, I very narrowly miss out. At just over the threshold I don't feel I'm earning massive money in Wellington and am certainly not finding things easy at the moment but appreciate there has to be a cut off somewhere and plenty of people need it more than me. What's more frustrating is being told for a third year in a row (working for a Government department) that I'm not allowed to have a pay increase because the Government has to continue to operate pay restraint and needs to be able to pay for these things. Just feels like forever falling backwards, but do appreciate I have a secure job.

I do feel the COL payment hasn't been correctly targeted in some ways though. Why is it individual and not household based? I understand things like benefits, working for families and super depend on partner's income so it can't be that the information isn't there. Ends up with situations like the non-working partner of someone very highly paid, plus their 18 year old child still living at home both get it whilst likely living in a situation where it wouldn't be noticeable.

Regarding the overseas people, wonder if for some it may be a case of avoiding student loan interest by not updating their tax residency. Would have though the Government knew who had left and whether they had re-entered by passport information.

To be fair, on the scale of the payment (2.1mio at least) and the timeframe of roll-out, its really not possible to do anything but have a cut off line based on a certain level of income and just carpet bomb the target zone. Sure, there will be some misses and undesired effects, but as soon as you start toying with the formula (e.g. Auckland cut-off $ 85k, Gore cut-off $ 60k etc) then it adds complexity, cost and time before any $ have passed hands. If the cost of doing it right is more than the cost of a few errors, then you accept the errors and move on. Downside is it leaves you open for attack (as we are seeing).

Oh I'm not attacking, just annoyed I missed out, as I wouldn't describe myself as "rich" by any stretch of the imagination. But I also take the point that there are people out there who need it far more than me - although Jesus there are some whiners in the comments section on FB, you'd think the Government can't do a single thing right at all without them picking it apart.

I swear, people like this (always moaning and complaining about everything) must be the absolute life of the party. Not 🙄

Rikkitic:

But are we talking about a thousand, 10,000, millions, a dozen? Most likely it is not more than a handful, which at $300+ a pop, is hardly a 'debacle'.

David Parker estimates (perhaps optimistically) about 1 in 100 people will receive it in error, which would be about 21,000 people based on the 2.1 million estimate of total recipients. 21,000 x $350 = $7.35 million. That's an amount that could possibly be put to good use somewhere.

If that turns out to be the case, I would term it unfortunate and wasteful and ask if it could not have been done better, but I would not call it a debacle.

So all parties are opposed to Labours plan around the supposed independent (but Government led) oversight committee to police Oranga Tamariki. If it's Government run it's not independent, and we have multiple agencies who are truly independent who could properly oversee this review.

It's been voiced to them in the strongest terms by multiple parties and despite the fact that most of the other times Labour has recieved advice not to proceed with something, and gone ahead anyway, it's been a miserable failure, they seem determined to continue down this road.

This is the TVNZ thing again but in a much much more important segment. Oranga Tamariki has failed to deliver it's primary objectives over and over, and it needs to be unhindered by potential political influence.

So the Govt is now using Shorty Street to try and promote nursing -

'Is this for real?': Govt blasted over plans to promote nursing using Shortland Street (msn.com)

Although I have to laugh at one of National MP's tweets -

National MP Chris Penk led the online criticism, using the collaboration to lash out at the Government.

"Interesting partnership between the government and Shortland Street," Penk Tweeted. "One is a fictional setting where people who aren’t qualified in real life make a show of pretending that they're caring for others  …… and the other is a TV show. Sad."

That would have to be one of the better Twitter burns I have read from any MP

Can't imagine there's much realistic about working in a hospital in Shortland Street. My wife works in a major hospital and always laughs at how characters just decide to go off on leave on the day and it's totally fine or they resign and leave immediately that day with no notice. In reality her team have just been told they are so short staffed that there will be no annual leave approved for the rest of the year and it's unlikely anyone will be allowed more than one day off for Christmas.

I seem to remember some years back recent NZ graduate Nurses were finding NZ Hospitals would not accept them.
There was talk at the time a a bunch leaving the country or not continuing in profession.

The on the ward training and extra courses on the job to move to higher level of qualification not being offered.

Decoupling training from positions, resulted on Hospitals sourcing higher qualified Nurses from overseas.
Saving the inefficiency of having to train and support more junior nurses to move up the ranks.
Being we had a whole cost cutting ideas factory pocketing bonuses for brilliant ideas disconnected from outcomes.

Was this a continuing issue that would have put off future trainees ?
Or not a factor ?

Shorty St is a TV drama. if you feel that its now representative of Covid NZ, well, not sure what to say

I literally said it's unrealistic and my wife who is a hospital worker laughs at how unrealistic it is in the post you quoted. Find it quite funny the government plan to use it to promote nursing when the real thing couldn't be further from how it is portrayed.
