CNN - The curious case of the White House official Trump says 'doesn't exist'

On Thursday the Trump administration held a "background briefing" where a "senior White House official" provided information to reporters from The New York Times, CNN and lots of other news outlets.

On Saturday, President Trump claimed the aide "doesn't exist."

It's a flagrant example of Trump's problem with the truth.

The president frequently claims, without evidence, that journalists make up sources. This is widely recognized to be a fib at best and a lie at worst.

He said it again in a tweet against The Times on Saturday: "Use real people, not phony sources."

But members of the White House press corps quickly pointed out that the unnamed "official" met with a roomful of reporters. Trump's claim was easily proven false.

To attend the briefing - about the status of President Trump's possible summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un - reporters had to agree to leave the aide's name out of their stories.

This tactic, a "background briefing," is frequently employed by White House press shops. Reporters regularly object to it, but it's a long standing fact of White House coverage.

This is getting more like it:

Former Republican WH Director of Communications telling the news as it really is - and forewarning viewers that what they're going to hear from the President is a pack of dirty filthy lies and a smear campaign.

NK and SK meet again, apparently to discuss Trump and the summit.

Tell me, why does the US have to be involved? Can NK and SK come to an agreement so they can push forward, without requiring US support or US involvement? Lets assume NK and SK dont care of there are 20,000 troops in SK. IMO they are just there for the sake of a US presence. And lets assume China will be friendly with SK

Even if this is the outcome, Trump sees a big political opportunity & possible Nobel Peace prize if he can claim the 'deal of the century' & preferably a month or two before the USA mid term elections. So I think he will want to be very much involved.

Of course - but he now has to take a deep breath, revise demands for preconditions, and stop the hawkish threats.

There's no chance Trump will ever get a Nobel prize.  2017 winner of the peace prize was ICAN - it would be a spectacular turnaround if the Nobel Committee awarded the prize to the leader of a hawkish administration who'd sabotaged one nuclear treaty, issued threats to use nuclear weapons, given large increases in funding to a massive military machine - including for a program to increase the capability of their nuclear arsenal.

It won't happen.

Stranger things have happened - they gave the Nobel Prize to 'Toastmaster in Chief' Obama before he had done anything. Perhaps the Nobel committee thought they may as well give him the prize straight away as they had an inkling that a more appropriate time was not likely to eventuate.

After Trump tweeted this morning that the White House official "doesn’t exist," reporters who attended Thursday’s formal, on-background briefing revealed that the "senior official" was very real - National Security Council member Matt Pottinger.

Journalist Yashar Ali even posted a recording of Pottinger’s press briefing.

Tweeted The Times‘ Nicholas Kristof:

Vanity Fair - As Trump Prepares for 2020, Democrats Are Losing the Only Fight That Matters

Even in an era of historic media fragmentation, Donald Trump dominates our attention universe to the point where he blocks out the sun.

Is it any wonder that people don’t have any idea what Democrats stand for?

On the same day this week that President Donald Trump was tweeting about the F.B.I.’s fictional SPYGATE “scandal” and the special counsel’s WITCH HUNT into the Trump campaign’s relationship with Russia, Senate Democrats held a photo-op at an Exxon [petrol] station.

The Senate minority leader stood behind a sign that proclaimed, rather impotently, “Senate Democrats Demand Lower Gas Prices.”  [press coverage was minimal]

Trump has mastered attention capture. ...

Yep but that article shows - somewhat ironically - that a rational but verbose argument in response to one-line lies and memes - won't influence the opinions of f%^king idiots.

That leads me to the unhappy conclusion that Trumpism (and other populist quasi-fascist movements) won't be beaten easily by "taking the (or any) high road".

The Atlantic - The Measure of Trump’s Devotion

On Memorial Day, as the nation turned to the president to lead its shared rituals of unity and common purpose, he revealed himself unequal to the office he holds.

Trump’s perfect emptiness of empathy has revealed itself again and again through his presidency, but never as completely and conspicuously as in his self-flattering 2018 Memorial Day tweets.

One observation about his latest nasty Memorial Day Tweet - the usual plague of bots and Russian trolls don't seem to be following up and leaping to his defense.

71,435,339 of the 57% of the eligible voters voted against Trump 62,984,828 voted for Trump. I could be said America hasn't voted for yet.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

And the rest didn't dislike him enough to vote against him, so they effectively helped to elect him. The majority of Americans either want him, or don't want someone else.

EDIT: And also, he is exactly the kind of president the Electoral College was supposed to veto.
