deepred:It's less an overpopulation issue, and more of an overconsumption issue. Climate deniers are increasingly accepting that climate change is happening... only to blame it on Global South overpopulation.

Climate denial is waning on the right. What’s replacing it might be just as scary

The wacky right climate deniers now claiming a conversion, it's just another opportunity for recruiting imo.

The NY Times - Federal Inquiry Traced Payments From Gaetz to Women   [free link]

breaking

Federal investigators established a trail of payments from Matt Gaetz, President-elect Donald J. Trump’s choice to be attorney general, to women including some who testified that Mr. Gaetz hired them for sex, according to a document obtained by The New York Times and a lawyer representing some of the women.

The document, assembled by investigators during a three-year sex-trafficking investigation into Mr. Gaetz, is a chart that shows a web of thousands of dollars in Venmo payments between Mr. Gaetz and a group of his friends, associates and women who had drug-fueled sex parties between 2017 and 2020, according to testimony that participants are said to have given to federal and congressional investigators.

At the parties, women, and a girl who was 17 at the time, were paid for sex, according to accounts of the participants’ testimony ...

Detail of a diagram obtained by The NY Times shows how federal investigators
mapped out payments between Mr. Gaetz, his associates and women.

(see website for full diagram)

EDIT

“The fact that Matt Gaetz was stupid enough to pay for sex with Venmo - that alone should be disqualifying.” - JIMMY KIMMEL

From Orwell's 1984: Doublethink: “To know and not to know, to be conscious of complete truthfulness while telling carefully constructed lies, to hold simultaneously two opinions which cancelled out, knowing them to be contradictory and believing in both of them, to use logic against logic, to repudiate morality while laying claim to it, to believe that democracy was impossible and that the Party was the guardian of democracy, to forget whatever it was necessary to forget"

The Guardian - Trump Pentagon pick attacks UN and Nato and urges US to ignore Geneva conventions

25 Nov 2024

Pete Hegseth, Trump’s nominee for secretary of defense, has attacked several key US alliances such as Nato, allied countries such as Turkey and international institutions such as the United Nations in two recent books, as well as saying US troops should not be bound by the Geneva conventions. ...

Hegseth appears to argue that the US military should ignore the Geneva conventions and any international laws governing the conduct of war, and instead “unleash them” to become a “ruthless”, “uncompromising” and “overwhelmingly lethal” force geared to “winning our wars according to our own rules”. *

Hegseth’s policy preferences may raise concerns about the future of Nato, the escalation of tensions with Israel’s arch-foe Iran, and impunity for US war criminals, such as those who Hegseth persuaded Trump to pardon in his first term.

*  "Hey, Al Qaeda: if you surrender, we might spare your life. If you do not, we will rip your arms off and feed them to hogs.”     Nasty  😦

Awww, poor Rudy (not).

Speaking to reporters in the hallway outside the courtroom on Tuesday, Giuliani continued his tirade about Liman, calling him an “activist Democrat.”

Liman is a Trump appointee.

Well, that backfired a bit!

Astonishingly, he still regrets nothing apart from the way he's been treated, never mind the two election workers whose lives he basically ruined with his lies. But I bet he's quite bitter about the fact that he took the fall for the orange buffoon, and was then promptly hung out to dry when he failed - moreso that Rudy happens to be one of the very few of Trump's former cronies that this has happened to.

Deplorable political behaviour closer to home:
In this article relating to a gang funeral in Tauranga: https://www.stuff.co.nz/nz-news/360502711/police-eagle-helicopter-help-monitor-tauranga-gang-funeral

A kuia has confronted police outside a cemetery in Tauranga as the tangi of a prominent Mongrel Mob member continues.
“Someone in charge come and tell me why you’ve parked outside my cemetery where my people are buried, how disgraceful is that," she yelled.
"Go park up the bloody road. I buried my cousin there on Saturday," she continued.

In the comments of the video post on Facebook, Te Pāti Māori co-leader Debbie Anne Ngarewa-Packer said fellow MP Rawiri Waititi was "on it" and that they were doing "all they can"
There has been a large police presence at the funeral on Thursday.

I don't care which party you are from, as a politician, you don't back the gangs instead of the police. It's pretty simple.

When you try to speedrun Trumps 2025 plan, without a subservient congress.

In trying to save himself, South Korea's President Yoon Suk Yeol may follow a well-worn path from the Blue House to jail
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-12-04/korea-president-drama/104682334

""
Since last month, Yoon has been gripped by a growing influence-peddling scandal involving his wife — a charge they both denied.

But the accusations of corruption hurt his standing with the public. In recent months, his approval rating hovered between 17 and 20 per cent.

From the USA, no doubt this was a targeted attack, since the killer used a silencer.

Who was Brian Thompson, healthcare CEO gunned down in New York?
...
UnitedHealthcare is the largest private insurer in the US.
...
Mr Thompson had been facing insider trading allegations.

A class-action lawsuit filed by a pension fund in May 2024 alleged that Mr Thompson sold $15m of his UnitedHealth Group shares when he knew that the company was under investigation by the US Department of Justice.

Officials were looking into whether the company violated US antitrust law, according to an investigation made public by a report in the Wall Street Journal in February.

The BBC has contacted UnitedHealth Group - the parent company of UnitedHealthcare - for comment.

UnitedHealth is a huge company with interests in insurance, health care providers, pharmacy services and health data. In 2023 it had more than $371bn in revenues.

According to court documents, the company has purchased more than 35 healthcare companies over the last 10 years. Justice department investigators have been looking into whether it used its market power to reduce competition, hurting customers and employees.

The Wall Street Journal reported that officials interviewed healthcare industry representatives, and were asking questions about “possible effects of the company’s doctor-group acquisitions on rivals and consumers”.

The City of Hollywood Firefighters’ Pension Fund initiated a complaint against Mr Thompson and other executives, accusing them of failing to tell investors about the investigation before selling a total of more than $117m in company stock.

The shooter apparently wrote the words "delay, deny, defend" on the bullets.

The phrase “delay, deny, defend,” is commonly used by attorneys and insurance industry critics to describe tactics used to avoid paying claims.

It refers to insurers delaying payment, denying a claim and then defending their actions. Health insurers like UnitedHealthcare have become frequent targets of criticism from doctors and patients for complicating access to care.

The company insures millions in New York State, and turned down 32% of all insurance claims last year.
