huckster: The frequencies you've found are Auckland Infill not Waiatura. Googling found me this....

The output file is TVGuide.xml by default, but the instructions post does tell you how to change this.

I'll talk to Giggles and we'll get it updated. Hope it's all go for you now.

Thanks Huckster, you've also raised something else that needs to be changed in the instructions post.

The instructions says the infill frequencies are the same as the waitara ones.
(I wonder what this means anyway - infill / waitara)

The other point about the possibility of TVNZ adding compression to the EPG is that existing STB's need to be able to cope with it.

The installed base of STB's here probably wouldn't be able to but the BBC is introducing a new service which is presumably only available on a newer STB.

Good to hear that you are already set up for Huff decoding.
I used to realtime Huf lossless encode video captures back in the old Win98 days, and I was always impressed by it's speed verus other codecs.

Encoding the EPGs does smack of the pointless and easily defeated DVD encryption scheme.
The broadcaster's should be making it easier not harder to watch and record TV.
After all, more veiwers watching means more advertising and more revenue for the broadcasters.
If they push to hard, all they will do is accelerate the drift to online viewing of content.

Yes I agree encoding the EIT would break the current Sat STB's EPG
But as NZ followed the UK MHEG 5 profile, there would be IMO be no problem for NZ certified DVB-T STB's to software decode the EPG from inside MHEG5, they would just get slowerrrrr.
After all, over the air Downloadable EPG protection was one of the design goals of MHEG5.
The Question is would they?
My gut feeling is they won't in NZ, at least not until the ASO has taken place like it has in the UK, if ever

What's ASO?

I thought there was chat a while ago about the BBC scrambling the PAT table so the PID's of services, including MHEG5 EPG, couldn't be located.

Any idea if that has progressed?

Didn't sound difficult to break either. There are only 65535 possibilities so a multi PID scanner could find the EPG stuff pretty quickly.

yes ASO=Analogue Switch Off,
Post ASO, DVB-T can move to higher transmition powers and use better digital modulation like DVB-T2 without interfering with the old analog channels.
Also they can move all the TV broadcast frequencies down below 700Mhz, so that the vacated spectrum can be auctioned on to mobile phone firms for use as 3-4G LTO etc networks with good range /inside building reception, per the Government's international agreement for spectrum allocation.

As for "the BBC scrambling the PAT table so the PID's of services" I believe UK's OFTcom may have stomped on the BBC, as it's outside the public nature of the BBC free to air broadcast license. (ie not a pay TV license)
That's probably why the BBC has now successfully pushed for the encoding of the EPG on freeview HD. (pushed by content owners for program flag copy restrictions)

Bug with trying to scan horizontal then vertical

Can only do vert or hor in one scan.

scanning the freeview by themselves = result
scanning sbs by itsself = result
powers combine = not working.

And I forgot to mention you will only need to scan a single frequency to get all stations EPG so the issue won't normally arise anyway.

There is a new version of the Collector (2.0.14) on Sourceforge.

The main reason for this release is that support for the OpenTV protocol used by Pay TV providers to deliver EPG data has been added. It is used here as well as in Oz, the UK and Europe.

There is no reason for anyone using it to collect Freeview MHEG5 data to rush to upgrade although it is a good idea to do it at some stage as we can only support the latest code. We do keep code for the old versions but only for reference, it will not be updated.

If you do upgrade there are a couple of points to note.

You only need to supply a single frequency now and all data (station info and EPG) will be collected from that single frequency. Any one of the frequencies you currently use will do.

As a result of this change the Station parameter has had to change in format. See the ReadMe for details. So if you are excluding stations or changing the channel ID and/or name you will need to update your ini files.

You should not have to change any other parameters. Although the ReadMe doesn't say this, the character you currently use on the end of the Frequency line is still supported (ie Y for MHEG5, N for EIT). However if you are updating your ini file it is a good idea to change it to the new values (MHEG5 and EIT).

Although the program has had a good deal of testing my partner giggles has been off the air for the last few days so if there are any early adopters (aka suckers) out there who would like to try the new version for DVB-T MHEG5 collection it would be appreciated.

Detailed change logs per version help.

When ever you add something new in the code dump it into some comment block at the top of the code.
Helps tracking quite a bit.
