Yeah I am in the same situation as Garethw. Splitter was put in the office where the VDSL modem is. He replaced the old splitter that was in there as it looks like the previous owners had one of the old 2 wire ones. He mentioned the cable looked to be alarm cable and not twisted pair. The house has no ETP and he couldn't find where it came in as there are jack points everywhere so couldn't guarantee that there were jack point connected before the splitter.

Seemed to connect ok at 36 down 10up. Which seems to be about what others that are about 400m from the cabinet are.

Is there anyway to workout where the source cable into the house?

NonprayingMantis: This might have already been answered in the thread, but it's a long thread.

Got my vdsl modem today, and the leaflet it came with says

"You can use the two handy USB ports to connect a storage device or a printer..."

Yet I can only see 1 USB port on the modem. did somebody misread the specs that said USB 2.0 and think that meant 2 x USB slots when writing the blurb? :)

I noticed the same thing and was going to ask!
Also has anyone been successful setting up a printer from the one only USB port? Is it in fact a print server?

I should be ordering this soon but one last question. Is this a new cable that is run underground or does it come in at the same point as the phoneline or does it come in somewhere else?

I have done an unboxing of the modem that you get from telecom for the vdsl. Is it okay to post the link in this thread to the video when i upload it so others who haven't ordered yet can see the modem ? or should i make another thread ?

Installation due tomorrow. ADSL2 has been bloody average here, with intermittent drop out.
Even setting up new Technicolour modem took us from 5mbps to 9mbps over wifi speedtest, and no drop out since (touch wood)
Cautiously optimistic about what we get with VDSL, even at 15mbps minimum would be an improvement over now

Sounds as though they are still having some teething troubles with VDSL ...
Was scheduled for VDSL install this morning. Chorus contractor arrived at 8.30a and had VDSL running by about 10a. Problem was no voice. Left saying that it should come right during the day. Called him at 2 to say "still nothing"
I called him again after 3pm to say voice working, no broadband. He had just been told they were rolling back to ADSL as there was a problem with the cabinet. That took until close to 5pm and then no fixed IP- I run my own mail server. After making a number of calls to the Telecom help desk, with the last one lasting just under 100 mins, I was told they couldnt get the fixed IP restored until tomorrow as the original works order had to be cleared first ..  I would have been happy to have no voice calls that loose the data, but no one asked. Communication through the install could have been better. Unfortunately getting sent to Manila a few times didnt help resolve my problems.
A very frustrating day and I'm only 200 metres from the cabinet.

Got my VDSL2 installed by Chorus today.  A big thank you to Reuben of Chorus of West Auckland for doing a fantastic job installing a master filter.  I was not easy because my house got six jacks and it turns out the one that was hiding behind a cupboard was the master jet, so had to move a lot of stuff to open it up.

The master filter was installed in the ETP and now I got a RJ45 socket in my study as the dedicated VDSL2 connection.

This was my ADSL2+ connection before the master filter was installed.

Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]:    1,065 / 19,383
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]:    12.1 / 18.5
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]:    4.9 / 7.5

This was my ADSL2+ connecton after the master filter was installed.

Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]:    1,065 / 20,907
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]:    12.1 / 18.5
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]:    4.1 / 5.0

This is my VDSL2 connection now:
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]:    10,347 / 46,057
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]:    429496716.5 / 13.5
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]:    13.9 / 6.2

Problem is that Chorus has not sign off the job so I got my VDSL2 "line", but the Telecom supplied VDSL2 modem cannot logon using PPPoE (error message was "Concentrator not reachable").  Called 0800 22 55 98 and they said I need to wait till 10am tomorrow to be connected (I am tethering my 3G mobile connection now).

Is this normal?

Right, I'm going to be all Ninja like and answer 5 at once. Usernames are in bold.

Might be worth giving 0800225598 a call and get another Chorus tech out to check your wiring just to make sure - at some households it can take a bit to see where that white wire comes into the house and if the install was anything like mine it actually took digging to get to the buried ETP :)

On most households the ETP is under the power box, take a look around there and if there's anything around there like gravel (in our case) try digging a bit to see if the ETP is in-fact underground. If you find it get Chorus to come around and fix up the master filter.

Call up 0800225598 and get them to check it, it might involve them coming out to check everything, sometimes failed installs happen but don't worry, the chaps there will try to get something sorted. VDSL as a product has been around from other ISP's for a wee while now but it's not until now a major ISP has taken it on their chins and actually done it to a mass amount of people all at once. Wayne, you might have something else dodgy with your installed, it could simply be the line card or even how the master filter is installed in the house, best call the number and get them to investigate it for you.

It's run over the same phone lead, no digging (unless if your ETP is underground like above hah) is needed, it's a pretty straight-forward install.

Good on you mate, from what I remember your internal wiring seemed to be adding quite a bit of noise which dropped performance by approx 50%, this should improve your line greatly! Let us know what speeds you sync at on the modem :)

Very good speeds! It's a shame you missed out my bulk post to everyone heh. This can be normal in some cases and remember, VDSL is still a rather new product so we're finetuning it as we go but it can sometimes take up-to 24/48hrs for Chorus to sign off on the job and our system to finish processing the provisioning order, but just goes to show how a master filter can also help out with your standard ADSL connection :) get some sleep and come back to it in the morning, at-least it's not going to be out for a couple of days!

Thanks Michael, will have to have a dig in the garden under the power box. The chorus tech seemed to think that ETP enclosures were only really installed from the late 80's and our house is early 80's.

If there is no ETP near the power box I'd say the phone cable would be somewhere around the power board, this is where it normally enters the house :)
