Pagani Huayra  is one of the worse names ever for a car, it makes no difference to the looks handling and performance of teh vehicle and therefore who the heck cares.

Gotta love the great New Zealand knocking machine

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Before the current recession, I had modest shareholdings in 10 different companies.
Eight of these companies changed their name when they got into trouble.
Seven of these companies failed, with huge losses for their shareholders.
Fortunately I have no Telecom shares :)

Journeyman: I think rebranding to Spark is a bit crap, but I think ShowmeTV is worse. TVNZ's marketing for TV2 for all of last year was celebrities saying "Show me drama... Show me comedy... Show me TV2".
Also, ShowTV might be a bit upset.

Really should have called it SparkTV.

That is a good point. Sparktv actually isn't a bad name, and would fit under the new branding. Although even using the word TV is using old naming conventions like telecom, so I thought they were trying to move away from that. The new modern services  don't have tv in the name, such as netflix, quickflix, hulu etc.

I personally thing Spark is such a bland and generic name, I think they would have been better to come up with an entirely new word.

KiwiNZ: I guess the top staff will be called Bright Sparks and the bad ones fizzers

Bright sparks will be the hackers that keep getting in to Xtra email.

Sounds like a shuffling going on and it's a neat way to distract from more staff cuts somewhere to make up the $20mil. I

I got my first over the top pi**ed off reaction the other day, when for the first time years I rung Telecom to cancel voice mail. I got put in the queue after the stupid automated woman couldn't understand "cancel voice mail" so I optied for the call back feature. I thought wow, this is probably the only innovation I've seen from them in a while (keep in mind I haven't used Telecom for 5 years until recently).

When I got a call back I was excited it actually worked and I answered the phone with huge expectations of talking to someone, and it was the blo&%$ automated woman again. Stuff that, I've never ever had my expectations of customer service ever sink that low before after she began to speak to me.

If that's what Spark is going to be all about (same old Telecom with more features someone else is already doing), I'm affraid the spark sounds like an intermittent fault to me that needs fixed by a professional electrician.

I wonder who owned spark.co.nz until Telecom decided to pursue this.

I see AJ Park seem to have acquired it on behalf of Telecom. Hope whoever sold it (surely it was already registered) got a good return.

Also - I think it's a stupid name for a Telco. Sure it aligns to their current marketing identity, but those change. I feel they would be better served by a name that portrays what they actually do.

you've been watching too much top gear.

pagani is the designer's name so that's legit.

huayra - is easier to pronounce than it looks (why-ra) and means god of the winds - no more dopey than names chosen by lamborghini (bulls), maserati/vw (winds) et al.

spark is just plain dopey , more so that they are spending $20m not long after a $5m spend to refresh the brand.

There are also IT providers calling themselves Sparx which could be confusing, as some of their services may overlap.

The .COM version of spark is a bit unfortunate for them, looks to be an online dating website. another take on the generic word spark . I wonder if they will try to buy it.

Unless you are a shareholder the expenditure of what is quite low for re branding will have little or zero affect on you.

Why is Spark dopey?

When was the master plan started? Was it set in motion as far back as the Cat's Butt symbol "It can mean what ever you want it to"?

well whatever ones thoughts the marketing has obviously got all of us aware of it.

Actually after a few hours with the name I realise it bothers me not a jot, if they renamed themselves Bob or someones name it may do.

For me "Spark" sounds like cheap "noname" company. "Telecom" is more strong oriented/related name for ISP.

Sorry about my English guys :>

In an alternate Universe, Snap was actually called Spark, and Telecom has just renamed itself Snap.
Cue posters/comments on nbr/stuff saying
"Lol, Snap, what a ridiculous name. Sounds like something is snapped in half and broken hahaha"

In another alternative universe, Orcon was actually called Spark, and Telecom has renamed itself Orcon
Cue posters/comments on nbr/stuff saying
"Lol, Orcon, what a ridiculous name. Sounds like a Fantasy race in Lord of the Rings"

In another alternative universe, Vodafone was actualy called Spark, and Telecom has renamed itself Vodafone
Cue posters/comments on nbr/stuff saying
"Lol, Vodafone, what a ridiculous name. Sounds like an STD helpline!"

etc
etc

I guess my point is that a name is what you make it, and plenty of successful businesses have names that, out of context, can sound silly, especially when they change it from something people are familiar with.

Brands seem to go for either go for a simple descriptive fact based name e.g. Air New Zealand, Watercare, Telecom New Zealand, Bigpipe, Netflix (it's like going to the flicks, but on the net!!) etc or go for something that doesn't mean anything specific to most people (it might have some obscure meaning that most people don't know), but they hope will evoke the right 'feeling' with their customers e.g. Google, Snap, Genesis, Orcon..... and Spark.

Just my opinion. :P
