If a backdoor was found in Huawei products then it would be all over the news. The potential benefits to US network equipment vendors would be massive, undermining Huawei would be their wet dream come true.

If the Americans don't have dirt they can publish we sure as heck don't. There is huge pressure coming out of the US against Huawei, and it is more around commercial reasons.

Didnt they say that Huwawei has no links to the government so you should feel free to install their gear?

So why the outrage?

Cant see nz government getting this excited if head of fontura got arrested in Canada?

I think China have shot themselves in the foot badly if they are trying to convince the world that Huawei is a normal company...

In some circles, MFAT is nicknamed the Ministry of Fonterra and other trade. So yes, the NZ government would be all over it like a rash

IIRC something like over 10 years ago there was a security vulnerability but the researchers concluded it was simply had crappy default settings rather than a deliberate act. As I've said in other forums - if it is of such a great concern there would be also an announcement by GCSB of a phased decommissioning of existing Huawei installations as well but given how willing the GCSB is to be so selective now and quiet about past deployments it is difficult not to conclude that it was a politically motivated decision where if we join in on giving a Chinese champion a black eye that it will help in the US's trade war with China and in return we'll get something from the United States for going along with the trade war indirectly. There also seems to be a lot of whinging by American companies about how they're treated by China but I have to ask why do they neglect markets where they already have more or less open access? the mythology of American businesses being persecuted by the Chinese government whilst American businesses fail to grasp that there is world beyond the shores of the United States doesn't exactly endear me to their plight over than it appearing to be American businesses being sore losers.

It'll be interesting to see how that impacts installations around the world especially if it becomes a growing trend to not only avoid Huawei for 5G but also replace existing Huawei hardware/software.

Germany's IT watchdog has expressed scepticism about calls for a boycott of Chinese telecoms giant Huawei, saying it has seen no evidence the firm could use its equipment to spy for Beijing, news weekly Spiegel reported Friday.

"For such serious decisions like a ban, you need proof," the head of Germany's Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), Arne Schoenbohm, told Spiegel, adding that his agency had no such evidence.

DOJ has charged Huawei with fraud, stealing trade secrets.

The United States on Monday charged China’s Huawei Technologies Co Ltd, its chief financial officer and two affiliates with bank and wire fraud to violate sanctions against Iran in a case that has added to tensions with Beijing.

In a 13-count indictment, the Justice Department said Huawei misled a global bank and U.S. authorities about its relationship with the subsidiaries, Skycom Tech and Huawei Device USA Inc, in order to conduct business in Iran.

In a separate case, the Justice Department also accused Huawei of stealing trade secrets, wire fraud and obstructing justice for allegedly stealing robotic technology from carrier T-Mobile US Inc to test smartphones’ durability.

T-Mobile had accused Huawei of stealing the technology, called “Tappy,” which mimicked human fingers and was used to test smartphones. Huawei has said that the two companies settled their disputes in 2017.

The charges add to pressure on Huawei, the world’s biggest telecommunications equipment maker, from the U.S. government, which is trying to prevent American companies from buying Huawei routers and switches and pressing allies to do the same.
