speaking of telecom number's did you know if you have a silent number, moving and can't keep the same number then you can request a number that has been a silent number previously and if the telecom person is nice enough they will give it to you.

What's a Silent Number?

Do you mean an Unlisted Number?

AFAIK there is no such thing as "Silent Numbers" in NZ.  Maybe in Aussie?

cokemaster: If you don't want your old number then:
1. Sign up for Naked DSL.
2. Enjoy.

This is the way I have gone. Also hopefully get rid of telemarketers that would ring my POTS line. But I must ring Xnet and ask them that my VFX number not be listed in our local phonebook.

My VFX number has never been listed even though I've had it for almost 18 months now.

No mine hasnt either and from what I understand before now we would have had to pay to put it in but going by fusion page FAQs this year unless you ring and tell them not to it will go in I took this from the FAQs

Q. Will my phone number be in the White Pages Listing?

A. Yes, you are entitled to ONE free listing per premise. WxC will facilitate this number being allocated in the White Pages - if you do not want your number published please call 0800 123 456. If you want more than one number listed please contact Yellow Pages Group (who administer the White pages) directly on 0800 803 803.

Did you port your number? I'm assuming you had your home phone line with Ihug?

I mentioned earlier the Ihug provisioning team have no idea what ndsl is or anything to do with the current process, customer link etc.

I'm on hold to them again now, expected waiting time is 20 minutes! If they still don't know what is going on not sure what else I can do as I have to keep my current phone number or my wife will kill me!!!

I did suggest yesterday to Ihug that they call xnet tech staff to get a quick run down on ndsl and operational requirements but I think they ignored me. (not suprisingly)

No I decided to start completely fresh and just keep my VFX number only. Nearly all people who ring me know that number. Also just got hold of Ihug and cancelled my POTS service and CSR was very inquisitive about what I had now. What he wanted to know he could have found out on Xnets VFX webpages.

Ok just got off the phone to Ihug.Cry

Talked to a few different people. First one said they don't provide customer link for residential clients.

I then talked to someone in business, he is going to contact Telecom to see what the process is.

I'm just about ready to give up to be honest. If they don't even know how to do a lne link and set up a dummy number I have no confidence at all that I can get through the process unscathed and keep my number.

To be fair to Ihug I guess as they aren't currently offering any ndsl service they won't be up to speed and all they are going to achieve by going through this process is one less customer. If I was in there position I wouldn't be bending over backwards to help.

The only other way is to change to Telecom and then to xnet but I just can't be bothered talking to more tech staff at another company etc...

Yes I know what ihug is like I use to work for them, do it the easy way and just chrun your phone back to telecom, telecom will take the phone back in about a day.

Just wondering if you could clarify one more thing for me Phil. On fusion FAQs it says that we are entitled to one free listing in white pages and that if we dont want this to ring 0800123456. I rang this as I dont want my phone number in the white pages. The man I spoke to said that if we do want a listing that we have to apply for it and that it wont be put in the white pages unless I apply. So could you please clarify which is the correct of the two. Thanks

Sorry just getting back to porting a number at a later stage, here is the email I sent to help@xnet.co.nz and the reply I got.
This proves that yes your landline number can be ported at a later stage down the track or at least that is what xNet is telling their support staff.
So what is it to be ?
CAN it be ported at a later stage ?
Can it NOT be ported at a later stage ?
This email say's YES it can!

Hello,

This is not a problem and you can port the number at any time. Please
be aware that to port a number it can take up to five working days to
complete.

Okay there is a couple of parts to this and you have to remember that when you get Naked DSL ALL the Telecom phones services collapse that means the phone number as well so if you are moving to Naked DSL and not customing linking the number or porting it then ity will go back to Telecom as you have cancel the number.,

You can have a naked DSL connection setup on a new line and you will get a VFX number on that with no Telecom associoated number with the DSL line, if you then wanted to port your other number as a later date you can no problem there.

To port a number you have to have an active number to begin with.
