Hmmm, what i keep seeing is that the speedtests are ok but some reports of real-world performance not being ok.

I think speedtests are probably irrelevant and people should be looking at actual activities like streaming, downloading and so on.

I would agree with this. My otherhalf has been house sitting for the past week and they have Spark VDSL, she made the comment their internet feels snappier and faster than Cable at home, esp when doing P2P stuff.

There isn't much in it but seems they have kept the WLG VF speedtest server in the same network, I must be hitting it at times when others are testing and not getting a proper result.

I think I now know where the issue is. Hardware needs to be able to support the speeds.

I have done a lot of fine tuning on pfsense and I now have a stable and fast connection. Old gaming computer p5q pro q9400 4gb ram. It helped to disable most on board features in the bios. Onboard artheros as the wan with a sketchy rt8169sc on the pci bus as the lan (still waiting on intel pci-e ebay card).

Getting 50+mb/s from steam with no stalling/stuttering. The HG659 just could not handle sustained high transfer speeds. It would ramp up to 40mb/s then stall for 10secs and ramp up again.

Approx 6 min for 19.2gb. Fast enough for me.

uTorrent is crazy fast seen 60+mb/s depending on seeders. I'd suggest if your having issues like I was just ditch the HG659 router and get a good one. I also tried with my trusty Tplink wdr4300 N750 with openwrt but its just not fast enough and VLAN tagging is not supported with factory firmware either.

Just regarding speedtests, I seem to be getting more reliable tests from ACSdata instead of the vodafone server. I notice that the DOCSIS 3.1 connections are inside the "ihug" network instead of "Telstraclear" so wondering if this is making a difference

Having just been upgraded from 50/2 to 200/20 I can confirm it is definitely on the old ihug network.

Speedtests are quite consistent for me how ever:

Real world so far is matching this, 24MB/s Battle.net download.

Streaming from YouTube and Netflix starts quicker, pages load faster - this is all using the HG659 as well which has me surprised.
Haven't got my storage machine set back up yet, so haven't tested P2P.

Will test again tonight during more 'peak' times.

Shrubs post got me a little curious to see what sort of speeds I would be seeing on my set up at home as I am also running a pfsense box built on a mini-itx GA-E350N board (AMD E-350 + A50M) with a quad port intel gig card. The install is relatively simple and I haven't bothered setting up snort etc. I did have have everything installed previously to make sure the system could handle it and it did so I blew it all away and have gone back to a simple setup and will tweak/install addons as I go.

Originally I used to see speedtest results as high as 950 down/99 up. Over the last week or so, I haven't really seen this spike up any higher than 810mbps down but I think this may be related to everything else going on. The main selling point for me to get FibreX was the upload speeds and this is working like a charm, especially being able to stream videos at full 1080 etc.

I ran a quick test on steam to download something and below is what I saw:

I don't really do p2p "directly" so can't comment on that.

And not seeing any real drop is performance - managing 20MB/s quite consistently.

Everything from game updates, to streaming media and P2P.
All while using the HG659 they gave me.

Compared to the NetComm NP805N Vodafone gave me AGES ago, the HG659 has far better wifi - more reliable and farther reaching.

I must admit, I was lining up a replacement based on peoples comments here.
But aside from the very simplistic dumbed down interface, it works.

I was getting 100Mbps with the same download when I was on 100/10 cable.

Typical real-world download speeds are 30Mbps or less (even when downloading multiple large files with a download manager).

Using the HG659* or a Ubiquiti Edgerouter Lite I get identical results.

* I agree that the HG659 is quite a good router, provided that you don't want to do anything too complicated with it.

I am feeling that rate limiting now!
Just tried a web based download of a MS ISO from the Trial and Enterprise sources - both wouldn't exceed 50Mbps.
Tried P2P - same thing.

Deleted a game I tested downloading this morning, re-downloaded it - 50~70Mbps.

What was interesting, it looks like its actually somehow a per machine limit.
I couldn't surpass the limit on one machine, so tried downloading the ISO on another and it topped out at 50Mbps, while the first maintained that speed.

We seem to be consistently achieving stellar performance here. I'm frequently breaking 60 MB/s (480 Mbps) on Steam and Battle.net, and even downloads from, say, digitalfoundry.net can reach and sustain speeds in excess of 65 MB/s (520 Mbps).

I'm not at all concerned about hitting gigabit speeds on individual downloads, since that's not at all realistic. Most hosts do not have the bandwidth to send that quickly to one individual user. The truly nice part of gigabit is being able to have multiple people downloading several things in parallel at high speeds. Unlike the old 130 Mbps line, one person downloading a game isn't enough to partially starve the line for other users.

Gigabit is all about sharing. :3

Well, all was almost -too- well with my upgrade from 100/10 to 200/20 for $30 less a month over the 24 months - speeds have been nice and stable, no noticeable congestion on my node to speak of - happy camper!

Then I got my bill.

Yeesh.

Both the part month charge (for the 7 days up to the billing cycle date) and the full month charged in advance are at the retail rate without the promotional discount of first 6 months half price applied...

Good old VF does it again!

NB - Billing query email sent via VF website for resolution, I'm just having a whine because I'm a bit saddened to be proven right that I thought that it was all going too well....

Anyone else had their bill mangled?

@Kezz0r I would call and they should be able to sort it on the phone just make sure you call the 0800 number on the invoice

Nope, mine seems fine. Correct discounts seem to be applied and I got the $100 credit for missing the three day deadline. Though somehow I seem to have been incredibly lucky and the new bill is almost exactly (1 day off) my normal billing cycle. So no adjustments for part months.

It's such a shame because the ordering (and yes discount was discussed at this point) and the provisioning/install (same awesome tech that did my 100/10 from my old 10/2 plan) was crazy-quick and flawless... Perhaps more fool me for hoping that the battle since being yoinked from camp T.C. to camp VF might very well be won this time... *sigh*... Guess I'll call them tomorrow when I can be paid to be on hold :P
