InstallerUFB:I suspect from the comment about phone number being inherited from the previous owners etc that your phone number is 'customer linked' from Glenfield to Helensvile and you are feed from HL/W Cabinet due to your location area.
Linking like this is when a number(a) from one exch (A) is linked through to another exchange(B) and that numer(a) is then superemposed over an actaul number(b) from the linked to exch(B). Normaly looking at number(a) it would appear to be 'switched' at exch(A) but would appear on the phone network connected to exch(B).
Forget about my ramblings above as I have just spotted, what Ray explains below, in this case some of the PCM systems in HL/W are feed/Hosted from GLF and some from HL - so that is how you can have a GLF number and your neighbours can have a HL one
So getting back to which exchange/cabinet your physical line is connected to - I have done some quick calulations and WM/G feeds to about 1295 Old North Rd - and HL/W feeds back from 1640 the other way - HL/W also appears to have a fibre feed DSLAM
juha: The Glenfield RAN (Regional Access Node? forgotten what the abbreviation stands for) maybe, but not the actual DSLAM.
If you're on a rural cabinet with the old Conklin DSLAMs that only have one or two 2Mbit/s circuits for backhaul, things ain't gonna shift quickly for you. Ask Chorus if they're planning to upgrade the cabinet, or check if there's a wireless provider operating in the region.
sharknet:
All we are trying to do is extract value for money from what we have.
Paying for BB and getting something like it is fine, getting sub dial up speed most of the time is not. Our account was transferred from Telstra, and the speeds have progressively gotten slower and slower over the last two years or so.
At least with Telstra we got a "stable" 1-2Meg.
Jase2985: Sharknet: read every post in this thread http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?topicid=147241
then compare it to this thread. Pretty much the same, and you will have the same result as Tim did. nada, zip, nothing.
Move on and find something you can get that provides a better service

I've been trying, but Chorus wont talk to end users, that is why I have been trying to get Vodafone to help out.

Yup, read that. Also read plenty of instance where there have been upgrades as a result of people "lobbying" their ISP's.
Love to move on, but seeing as how we cant even get a decent cell coverage here from any providers, and lets face it cell phones have been 'round for decades now, what chances do I have?

sharknet: Been there.
According to the Chorus map, we are in a 5Mbps area.
Map shows both cabinets HL/W and WM/G, equidistant from here (By road about 2km each way)
HL/W PCM /STC feeder copper (H/L)
WM/G Nokia 480 Feeder copper (WM)
