You can check if you have pro or home windows 8 by:

From the Start screen, type winver and press enter.
Take note of the version in the About dialog window.

So you haven't tried restarting your computer, and letting it boot from USB? What kind of upgrade do you need to perform first?

This is turning into a nightmare... with so much information out there on how to go about installing Windows 10.

Yea haven't booted it from USB to upgrade yet. It's confusing as... from what I've read sounds like you have to run the upgrade from within windows to get the license upgrade done first. Not sure if it counts the "free" upgrade offer when you do it from boot. Can't find solid information, and not really wanting to reinstall 8 again to upgrade.

I would say yes. Mine said Pro after the 8.1.

Sounds like you have to do a upgrade the first time, from then on you can do a "clean" install.

MikeB4: OK I did this and my Surface is now installing Windows 10. It would seem that it had stalled somewhere in the process..

What this error means is, your Windows 10 installation folder is unfinished and/or corrupted. Now, how do you fix that?
1. Go into "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download" and delete everything in that folder.
2. Now, run the command prompt as an administrator. Type in "wuauclt.exe /updatenow".
3. Go to your Control Panel > Windows Update and your Windows 10 should start re-downloading from scratch, hopefully without flaws this time.

Question, on my one PC I have an OEM version of windows 7 pro 32-bit (only), it has no 64-bit version on the original media.

If I download the Windows 10 Pro 64-bit media will I be able to install it using the key I have for the 32-bit OEM version?

I can't upgrade using the 1st option (Upgrade this PC) because that only gave me "Something happened." As I said, this is turning into a nightmare.

Behodar: The images are now up on MSDN... although it claims that my active subscription has expired so I can't actually download it or get a key!

Still not working. I've tried using my 7 Ultimate and 8.1 Pro keys and neither of them work (they actually give different errors - 7 says that the key "didn't work" and 8.1 "could not verify"). Does anyone else have MSDN and is it working for you?

You can try running the setup.exe from the DVD / boot disc within windows but for me that just gave the "something happened" message again and sounds like you should refrain from running from boot until someone tests that can be done for the upgrade part.

Open that ISO from your running version of Windows
Run setup.exe

Maybe, as per the link http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/media-creation-tool-install?ocid=ms_wol_win10 I mount the ISO, and run setup.exe, without making a bootable DVD or USB (or burn the ISO to DVD) from within Windows 8.1?

EDIT: just seen the previous post which confirmed my thoughts.

My ~BT folder is still sitting at 6.62GB in size (although it states the size on disk is less than that), containing 17,745 files and 3,602 folders.

I hope by running setup.exe before I haven't buggered things up.

It finished the download and then I got an error "Failed: 1 Update", "Code 80240020". I have seen a few people on Reddit who had the same error.

I have the same code - for Win 10 Pro. The BT folder is empty now as well.

Edit: I just tried the update tool above. When I selected "upgrade this pc", it came up with a nice meaningful error message: "Something Happened".

Now trying to make a pen drive install, but not sure where I need to get the license key from.

You would need to upgrade to the 32 bit version of W10 and then clean install to the 64bit version as you can't upgrade from 32 to 64.

When making media with the download tool you can specify an image that is both 32 and 64 bit.
