I am getting products from Tamaki Makaurau at an average 2 days from order. From Otautahi average 3 days.

I’m interested, since Te Reo is an official language, is the bolded above how you address your parcels? It may explain why you get better service.

However, I believe you are in the southern part of Te Ika-a-Maui, so is it possible that it takes two days from Tamaki Makaurau to your locale and then three days to Otautahi. So the same 5 days as msukiwi referenced?

We are in Te Awakairangi. Yes I use the original name but I doubt that quickens the service.

LinkedIn idiots and how you get to see their comments on other people's posts.

There's a woman who posted a few weeks back a video of her playing the piano in her underwear (and it seems more and more women are appealing to this kind of thing to get more "followers"). Most comments were men asking for her to send them private messages or phone number.

Today I saw this same person posted a picture with the comment "Please Like My Picture". I saw the post because an idiot (my connection) commented "Great post Mariam, Keep sharing great insights :)"

Great insights? She didn't post ANY insight. She posted a revealing picture and asked for followers. It's a trap.

There are a bunch of thirsty people on LinkedIn.

I closed my Linkedin account a while back. It has moved way beyond what it was supposed to be. It is just another Facebook now

Another LinkedIn one. Someone posted a link to an Instagram post purportedly reporting a nurse had been sacked for not taking a third covid vaccine shot. The post says she had complications after the second shot. Cue the people saying the New Zealand government is running an experiment, killing people, etc.

The Instagram account is from a person that dabble in holistic health, alternative medicine, crystals and hypnosis... The post is going around on Twitter through antivax circles.

People are dumb enough to click "Like" to a headline without investigating if the claims are actually true.

I wonder what he would think of today's world. Things have gone downhill quickly since his time.

I'm only on day 9 of the "5-12 days" estimate, so I'm not too worried yet. It's the "*May take up to 8 weeks" underneath that's a little concerning!

It arrived on day 11. I can now have my comics fix. 😛

"I have a foreboding of my children's or grandchildren's time when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what's true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness." - Carl Sagan

That I have to make an extra, active effort to avoid the stupidity of SOME people. Simply ignoring it is no longer enough.

Why I don't like updates

I am against updates in principle. In my experience, they usually just break something I depend on. I have made this point before, but over time details grow cloudy and I can’t always remember exactly what the issue was.

This time is different. It just happened, it is very specific, and I think it is worth pointing out.

My main streaming device is a Nvidia Shield. I have it set up the way I want it. This cost me a lot of effort initially but I got there with some careful customisations and a lot of trial and error.

The first thing I did was disable the Home Page, which was mainly just filled with app clutter and Google rubbish. I use Kodi and other apps as control devices, which give me far more flexibility. The Shield Home Page adds nothing of value for me (I did check) so I just installed an auto-launcher to jump to Kodi. It has worked well for many years.

I don’t like Google as a rule, but I have a restrained version of YouTube on Kodi that gives me what I want without all the crap.

I was intrigued when I heard that YouTube had finally started supporting Dolby 5.1. I have never succeeded in getting surround sound off the Internet, despite determined attempts. I decided to try again.

I needed to eliminate the Shield as a possible obstacle, so I decided to finally update it. I did this very reluctantly as I am a strong believer in not fixing things that aren’t broken. But I couldn’t be certain that the Shield wasn’t the problem and I decided to bite the bullet and deal with the consequences. It has been several years, after all.

I had to go through several updates to get to the latest, but to my relief and mild surprise, I made it without hosing everything. Then I discovered the first consequence. The Shield began randomly restarting every few minutes. Not a full reboot, just reloading the Home Screen. I tried several things but couldn’t find the cause. I finally decided to return to factory settings. I didn’t feel like I had anything to lose.

This did fix the problem so I started reinstalling everything. After two days it is back to usability. Except the Home Screen is worse than ever, with apps, Disney promos, Google recommendations and god knows what else dancing around. Fortunately this can all still be switched off, though I had to dig to find it. Almost back to normal.

Except now the launcher won’t auto-start Kodi. It used to work just fine. Launch on Boot. I did some searching and apparently that functionality is no longer possible. The only reason I can think of to disable this is to force people to see the damned promos and recommendations and other crap on the Home Page whether they like it or not. Never mind they have paid hundreds of dollars for this product.

I still don’t know if I can get surround sound. I have been busy trying to find a way around the auto-launch block. I do know I will never give another dollar to Nvidia.

Well, without wanting to get into the same groove: somehow they have to re-finance their unsolicited, annoying bloatware.

The tactic of taking the customer by surprise may work for some smart, short-sighted marketing managers, but the big end comes with a time lag after which customers no longer put up with it.

People who pull down half a rainforest worth of paper towels to dry their hands in restrooms. You use two towels to get most of the moisture off, then one or two more if needed, not a bunch of thirty or so where you throw about twenty away unused.

Being presented with a box of completely identical teabags in packs, trying one out and realising fairly quickly that it's jasmine tea, replacing it with something called Singapore Breakfast Tea, and finally ending up with a brew that's almost, but not quite, entirely unlike tea.

Which is why I always travel with a box of Dilmah, which unfortunately is currently in my checked luggage.

When the folk servicing the facilities have once again managed to jam the paper towels in the dispenser in such a way that you have to jemmy them out somehow and nearly break two fingers in the process and you end up with 20 of them, instead of being able to pull one at a time if it was working and had been loaded as designed.

And don't even get me started on bin liners that haven't been fully opened before they were put in.

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

Google managed to send me a "you missed a message" email overnight. The message in question was not missed... and was from last August.

This is not easy either, after all there are 4 ways to insert the stack of papers and only one of them is correct! The staff is paid for refilling - there was no question of proper refilling.

By the way, what are you grumbling about? For intergalactic travel, it is mandatory to carry your own towels! ;-)
