KiwiNZ: The Heat with Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy.......OK 6/10.

Ah, that's the one I was trying to remember other day. Watched it but wouldn't give more than 4/10.

I saw "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty".

I'm not a ben Stiller fan by any measure.....but he has made a movie worth watching. The scenery (a Kiwi cinemtographer at work) is stunning in parts. There are several very touching scenes that make you glad you went to see the film. Ben Stiller's tendency to deadpan slapstick even when not appropriate doesn't overly detract from the movie.

The underlying theme is a guy lost in a life he didn't want, due to unfortunate past events, who suddenly finds himself doing things he needs to do......more in line with how his life could have been. It's a "coming of age" movie for the middle-aged in some ways.

I'd recommend it.

I am going to watch this, I can remember the original film with Danny Kaye I saw on TCM a few years back and it was good.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Enders Game. 7/10. Was interesting exercise as it was at the Bay Cinemas , Tauranga in a 15 seat theater. End of run. House lights dimmed sound came on but no pix. Someone forgot to turn on the projector so we missed all the ads and trailers. Movie was OK but would rather have seen it on a larger screen..

Enders Game 9/10 ; ). Excellent on a big screen. Classic sci-fi in every sense.

Got sucked into seeing the new Hobbit movie by SWMBO as it was on at our local cinema.

Meh. Too much made up stuff not in the book, gratuitous female character, several dwarves still not looking like dwarves, treatment too dark and so on.

Personally I still can't get used to how they are pronouncing Smaug too.....! Everyone I have ever discussed the books with pronounces that as 'Smorg' not 'Smowg' and that was how my father read it to me as a child.

Technically the film is correct but in common usage, not so much.

Your father knows the Tolkien dialects? From the way syllables are innunciated smaa-oogh sounds like how they said morrre doorrr instead of murder

Yes it was very dark with the glasses!

I have nothing to comment on as it was my first 3d and first hfr so I was mesmerized by technology and didn't pay much attention to the story apart from one said elf

I saw the new Hobbit movie last week. I had a similar reaction to some people above: Jackson changing the basic elements of the story wherever he liked.

I did think that Smaug was very well done (probably the best CGI creature creation to date), even if they once again ripped shreds out of how the story in the book played out.

I saw TDoS in 2D, as I always get eyestrain from 3D movies and don't intend to see any in that format again.

Just watched The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and it's pretty good. Interesting story, enough laughs... I give it 8/10.

I have watched a couple of films over the last few days.

Upside Down: A love story thinly veiled as a Scifi movie.
Actually quite engaging despite the weirdness of half the caharcters being upside down in the movie.
The general premise is quite cool, but was a little formulaic. Acting was good, the classic rich upper class vs downtrodden lower class was quite well done, but I couldn't quite tell what era it was suppoesd to be emulating...it was somewhat 1930's, somewhat 1970's and a bit 2000's... 6/10

Broken City: Watched this on Sky. A good cast, decent acting and a standard crooked politician vs straight cop type of storyline.
Could have done with a little less swearing...I swear like a sailor sometimes, but don't find the movies a great place to enjoy that kind of language when it's not really warranted. I understand that it was a way of developing the characters and allowing their various personalities to show through, but that could have been done with a better dialogue.
Was a bit slow at times and never really had a WOW moment. 5/10

Tauriel.

From Wikipedia:

"Although the character Tauriel does not appear in this story, she was created to be the head of the Elven guard by Peter Jackson and his wife and producing partner Fran Walsh,[3] in order to expand the world of the elves of Mirkwood Forest, and to bring another female to the cast, which is otherwise dominated by males."

Gratuitous.

Totally agree. We now avoid 3D for the same reasons.

Saw it in the cinema in Martinborough which has only 30 or so seats, all big comfy business class type! They brought our garlic bread and drinks to us in the cinema...!

I do wish Jackson would leave well alone. A little artistic licence is one thing, but creating new characters etc is a step too far.

You would be hard pressed to find movies etc that have not created additional characters, quite often needed to make the successful transfer from written to moving stories

How many people who watch this movie have actually read the books??  a very small percentage..
