It is never ignorant to ask a question. The use of single quotes is considered British, while Americans go for double ones. When you place a quote inside a quote, you use the opposite to distinguish them, so single quote inside double quote or vice-versa.

Okay. That makes sense for Runningman’s quote. But not for the headline on the One News website.

Aucklanders are being warned a weekend of extremely wet weather hasn't brought the city any closer to seeing the end of what is a severe drought. Parts of the city got more than half a metre over the weekend but the downpours have barely made a dent in the water storage lake levels.

Really Radio NZ? Would think there would be reports of flooding with that much rainfall in a day.

and still got it wrong (well, I guess it is over half a centimetre, but it should be over five centimetres). Stuff seemed to have it right at 59mm.

EDIT: From 10 times too much to 1/10th.

I don't really get the person's complaint to be honest, if they were THAT serious about keeping a bubble they wouldn't order meals from uber eats? Wouldn't you do what was only necessary and essential and keep a good stock of food in the house, a minimum of 2 weeks prior? I was expecting to read the delivery driver sneezed in their food and spat in their face

The Vodafone fibre-optic cable was separately cut earlier on Thursday morning in Napier in an incident that was still under investigation earlier, she said.

"Separately" here indicates, somewhat superfluously, that it wasn't done by a roading contractor in Matamata.

I'm assuming that "Thursday morning" means "this morning", and not Thursday last week.

I've seen the same thing several times when normally you'd expect to something like "this morning" or "this afternoon" and though it odd. I came to be conclusion this new way of expressing when an event occurred is a way to keep the article "current" at a later date when "this morning" is no longer relevant.
