He’ll give a damn when someone hijacks his account and starts spamming all his contacts with dodgy emails, goes through his existing emails to see what services he’s signed up for and runs password resets against them all.

He just wants to click the same old download button and have his emails arrive in the same old folders the way they always have. What is so wrong with that?

The world changes. Especially when it comes to IT. You can't keep using OSes from the 80s or 90s forever. Same with email clients.

Forget about filters, labels etc. All he has to know is click the link to open the email, and archive it once its read. Search for it if you want it back.

Can't get much simpler than that.

OB Frustration: People who are afraid of change.

My dad is in the age group of this guy you are talking about, and not an IT guy. I had to show him how to use Google mail once, and I have not had any questions about that since. Questions about OS, computer etc. on the other hand.... Think I will get him a Chromebook next...

I will discuss it with him. I have already warned him that this problem may reoccur. I have to say that I share many of his frustrations. I know more  about IT than he does but I am no expert by any means and I am also elderly. I get really tired of constant updates and changes, especially because they cause problems as much as they solve them. Once I have something that just works, I want to keep it that way. Most changes are about bells and whistles, not real security, and I get sick of all the unnecessary gimmicks.

When DHL get an item into NZ from the US, it clears customs and looks good for delivery in 2 days, and then spends 3 days seemingly sitting around doing nothing before being delivered. It feels like they set a date for delivery and then won't budge from it even if it COULD be delivered sooner!

It took less time to get from the US to NZ and through customs than my parcel from Newmarket took to arrive.

Under-bench microwaves.  We have these at work and whilst shopping for a new kitchen recently the bloke at Mitre10 told us that is 'the trend these days'.

It's the stupidest idea ever (with the possible exception of last year's Wellington bus network revamp).

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

We put ours underbench. We use it so infrequently we couldn't justify it taking up valuable bench real estate, and we couldn't put it up high. Higher is much more dangerous - taking out hot liquids above your head (SWMBO is 5'1") isn't a good thing.

I think the american thing of over the cooker is much worse. Low down is good if you have kids that want to heat snacks etc up. I still want it on a counter with enough space to lift things in and out of it onto the counter. Most counters are not deep enough since 600mm is all that is considered to be reachable to the back by midgets that they seem to design kitchens around.

Regarding undercounter microwave, be careful of letting kids heat stuff up in the microwave, in particular hard candy, to soften it up.

The microwave can turn the insides into molten lava, while leaving the outside unmelted, or worse explode when picked up, bitten into. There have been cases where children were burnt bad enough to have permanent scarring.

See the ancient Mythbusters S02E12 Exploding Jawbreaker episode

There also the rare superheating of liquids that could cause scalding.

Untested/buggy Websites. NZTA wanted my date of birth, and I entered it in dd/mm/yyyy format. "Please enter a valid date". After some fiddling with it, it eventually accepted it with a 3-letter month, but how about documenting that somewhere rather than playing "guess the format"?

That in the future you can buy pollution rights - I mean, it should be reduced as much as possible, not monetized.

More and more hidden convinience food in gastronomy. Cooked isn't cooked anymore but they still ask for the price of handcrafted food.

Having to write BBcode to insert a link on mobile.

Actually the whole UX on mobile is pretty miserable for me but that one is particularly annoyingly.

That half of the streaming sites in the world still insist on using Flash while Google refuses to support it. Someone needs to get with the programme.
