rugrat: No more impulse buying for me when I’m out for a walk, don’t think a reusable bag will squash into my pocket.

Is this all shops or just supermarkets, sometimes I get stuff from JB hi fi and it needs an extra large bag?

I would suspect that if you made a significant purchase from a retail store, clothing etc they will give you a “reusable” bag to take it home in. Time will tell how it all works out.

The government is asking for submissions on issues related to the phase out.

Not in rural areas where they are often thrown from passing cars into the gateway to await the owner's return!

How about banning the multitude of weekly circulars that are delivered and never looked at (has anybody ever looked at a Warehouse circular). Mine go straight in to recycling. There's the environmental cost of creating, delivering and recycling them all.

I also get free local (but not so local that I'm interested in the contents) papers, some pretty thick, that also go straight in to recycling. I've looked in to canceling them but apparently that's not an option. They just get given to the postie to deliver.

I suppose I could stuff them inside the clothes I'm wearing for insulation and then I won't need to use any form of heating.

Use them as toilet paper as well.

Seriously? You have a problem with poor people being able to afford children's toys and household goods?

Wow.

And surely it's up to the purchaser, not you, to decide whether something is affordable and value for money to them at the price point it's offered.

Ugh, so how are you guys transporting your fresh meat home without it leaking all over the place? The heavy duty plastic bags from the supermarket are fairly porous and cotton is worthless to contain beef/chicken juice.

Glass containers. Or even stainless. Putting it in reusable containers is a possibility in the future, but health and safety would be a nightmare.

One thing that I don't think has been discussed, is whether plastic is really all that safe to be wrapped around food. Sure there is food safe stuff, but that means that other plastic wasn't food safe. I still think plastic tends to taint the taste of things such as water. We had some plastic water bottles, and when water had been in it for a while, it changed the boiling properties of that water when it was put in the kettle. Basically water boiled out of the nozzle,. We thought it was a faulty kettle, but getting that replaced didn't fix the problem.

There's an argument that meat farming is worse for the environment than driving cars. Perhaps we need to ban meat, that would solve that problem.

But from what i gather its not technically all single use plastic bags. Imagine meat or iPhones and iPads with no shrink wraps or peel shells. And technically what they want to ban are not single use.

So has anyone been to a country where a ban is in place and can comment how it works in practise? Or uses one of the supermarkets that has stopped using bags?
