Does anyone know the research that led Newshub, on TV3, to feature backgrounds that move or are animated, in some way? They are generally fixed images that slowly change position behind the presenter (e.g. the weather maps, but also on most backgrounds) though the sports section features a bit more with constantly changing bits of images, not necessarily even relevant to what is being presented.

I suppose it's trivial but it can be distracting and I can't think of a single possible reason why the producers thought it was a good idea.

Oddly, on one programme (I think it was The Nation) only one camera featured the movement, another camera position showed no movement with the same background. It's bizarre.

Thoughts?

I have often wondered how much work they have to do with those sort of images.
The media like to get old historical photos and float the background behind people or objects in the front. I guess they cut one layer out of the photo and have to photoshop bits of the background that weren't in the photos.

They do add a little interest to the images.

It is something to hold attention. That is all. It annoys me but I'm not the target market for that.

But it holds attention to the background image, which distracts from what is actually being said. For the weather, that's less of an issue but I find myself tracking the picture, because I'm subconsciously trying to fix on some part of the map.

I just don't get it. I tried some feedback on their site but didn't get a response.

Stop watching it then? I can't see any compelling reason to watch TV news at all.

Fair point, apart from Al Jazeera, perhaps!

The Newshub bulletins are a bit of a waste of time if you're getting your news throughout the day, but The Nation is actually very good.
