Google fibre NOMINAL speed is 1000 Mpbs, but AVERAGE speeds are 250 Mbps.

I think people put too much into the "It's from outside NZ it must be better" basket.

Average to where? In NZ with gigabit should be able to pull 250 megabit from nz.archive.ubuntu.com pretty easily.

Average to speedtest. But we all know this is not really "real life". In reality every single user is different from another so the point is moot. I just think that saying "Google this" and "Google that" while dismissing local initiatives is hypocritical.

speedtest really doesn't scale well to gigabit speeds. so i wouldn't take that seriously. even on local network it can't do gigabit, when the network can do 800+ megabit seasily with raw file copys ssd to ssd.

i can't really think of many nz sites with large files to download to everyone though. nz.archive.ubuntu.com is my general go to for fast downloads, but last i knew that was negatively impacted on telstraclear.

I see a lot of regular city council folk on Facebook sharing this, trying to raise awareness...not sure they realise it's not really going to do anything for the town at all.

Every small city councilors dream is to turn their town/city into silicone valley, so I think this is playing a long to their desires.

Chorus should have focuses on mass market adoption of 100Mbps, 1Gbps seems kinda pointless when all the other business' you're sending files to are running ADSL. I deal with primarily small business' in my work, most if not all are using an adsl connection when fibre is on the street.

Maybe you will be able to load some Youtube videos faster, or download a song from iTunes in 1 second flat from Akamai, but that's not really productive...

dunno about google but microsoft is building an azure datacentre in australia i presume that will host things like sky drive for nz and australia

Amazon has a POP in Sydney with CloudFront and other services available.

CloudFlare has a POP in Sydney (which Vodafone can't reach for some reason or another so customers on Vodafone end up going to Singapore instead of Sydney).

Crashplan has a datacentre in Sydney (which Vodafone can't access directly so backup packets to Crashplan travel to the USA then to Australia)

Fastly has a colocated POP in New Zealand, using Trade Me infrastructure - I'd like to use them but it's a tad more expensive than CloudFlare - even more when you consider the SSL certificate we need for our secure pages.

It's pretty important to have good pipes to Australia.

Chorus are running this competition for an entire year - the reason for this must be that they are trying to promote UFB - by getting excitement up through people encouraging their town to win the Gigatown. I am sure that chorus would have loved to do the google fibre style 'fibrehoods' competition but it would have probably taken a lot of work to convince CFH that they should do that.

Any campaign that raises the profile of high speed internet is a good thing.

If more people want / show an interest in fibre the better.

Economies of scale is a good thing. Even if many people don't use them the increased expectations of people might drive more investment.

My carr can go much faster than 100km/h and probably averages less than 40 but I don't see a call for not developing car that go faster than 100.
