Technofreak: It's a weird world we live in where the retailer dictates what the customer can buy. That's not a dig at MS but a comment on this situation in general.

Why should Telco's have this power? In fact why should they be in the device retail space at all? We're back in the days where the NZPO dictated what phone you had in your house.

TV service providers like Sky don't sell TV's nor do they dictate what sort of device you can buy. I'm sure there are other examples.

TV is very much like telco. Sky is never going to let you decode their channels on FreeviewPlus devices for instance. Until recently TVNZ On Demand favoured Samsung TVs over other brands.

Pretty much any industry in which large businesses are involved in the distribution are going to have these kinds of market effects. We should be thankful we're not in the US where large swathes of the country are only covered by one cellular provider. In this local monopoly situation, both device manufacturers and customers have to bend over and be thankful for what they get.

A time-poor geek is hardly a geek at all

Parallel imports of many products are generally cheaper... the advantage of parallel imports is either cheaper stocks, or access to units not locally available.  Often the products are bought from markets that shift much larger quantities of product and therefore get lower buying prices through volume.

Most products you buy from parallel import store don't come with local warranty/repair options etc - you need to return to store who then ship units back overseas to point of origin.  Providing local warranty/service has a cost.

Add the local warranty options, to lower volume discounts, and you'll start to see where the price difference can come in.

(NB i'm speaking generally here, not specifically. This could apply to any product on market.  Though I work at MSNZ, i'm not in device sales and I have no knowledge of channel or landed lumia costs etc, so cant comment on that directly)

I would happily pay $120 (10%) for local support and warranty.

They're a brick and mortar store, so I would guess yes to both?

I will likely get mine via HK or China, pre-release pricing looks a lot better. http://world.taobao.com/item/523147896614.htm?spm=a312a.7700714.0.0.3VsQK6#detail

Ouch, that's a lot of coin for a plastic phone with limited apps, me thinks ...

I have $20 that says one will do so after Christmas, maybe late January or February.

Interesting isn't it.  The 950s were introduced in October and the reviewers still can't quite get it right.  Stating liquid cooling as a disadvantage with the 950 is N/A as the 950 never had liquid cooling.  It was only the 950Xl with the SNAPDRAGON 810 that has the liquid cooling.

Nothing new, many reviewers have been getting it wrong for years.

Some just copy and paste from elsewhere, some don't seem to know about anything except Android or iPhone and because the phone they're reviewing doesn't work they way they're used to it's no good, or just because they cannot work out how to access a particular feature therefore that phone doesn't have it.

It's amazing how many seem to think the dock is a pre requisite for using Continum. They don't do their homework.
