Apparently it normally takes about four hours, so that might be correct.  I assumed there would be a couple of people who do it manually and, based on the massive success Telecom had today, would have thought the system might be a bit overwhelmed.  Will be pleasantly surprised if the switch happens for me soon though (I bought mine at 10am).

I bought mine at the Christchurch launch last night, was told it would get done today, could take all day as there were lots of people getting numbers ported, but should still get done today.

As far as I'm aware we don't need to do anything.  Part of the process of Telecom (or any network doing porting for that matter) getting the number closes off the account at the other end.

That's right. Just make sure that you don't need to keep anything running; when I ported a few years ago I unexpectedly lost access to my Vodafone Music account (and the ~$70 prepaid credit that I had in there) because nobody told me that porting would cancel all other services.

Well, I ended up going to the Midnight launch and getting my nice Black, 64GB 4S. There was a nice long queue that went across the courtyard at the Britomart store in Auckland.

I was probably 8ish in line - not sure if anyone missed out. From what the guy said there were certain models people wanted but couldn't get (so like colour/size combo). But they had 5 iPhones left this morning when I went back to get a case.

I also ended up in the line outside the Vodafone store on Queen street, because I needed a new sim card because unfortunately my hack jobby this time didn't work out so well and I ended up killing my current sim card. but the good thing is, I have a proper micro-sim now so all is well. But there was a good 15-20 people lined up there.

I have to admit though, there were some pretty funny characters there at the Vodafone store.

The opening at britomart though was awesome. They had 2 guys on piano's and handed out lollies etc. there were smiling faces and hi-5's all round. awesome atmosphere.

Definitely will be going back to YooBee in Britomart next time I need an apple product, I would imagine - as the service was fantastic.

Liking my iphone 4S (Notice I said liking, not loving - thats another story)

PS: be aware of people saying that you can ONLY buy the phone if you get it on a plan... may be the case at Vodafone stores, but at Yoobee etc, you can go into their retail stores and provided they have stock, you can go ahead and purchase one without any issues... (I say this because on the radio this morning MAIFM, they were saying that you could only get it if you were going on or already were on a plan and were resigning which is total bull.)

I cruised into the local telecom store as they opened this morning. No-one else there. I asked for my nice black 64Gb iphone 4S outright and got the only one in store and the only one in the provice I understand. Online with Apple to cancel my order minutes later and I now have my phone two weeks earlier than I thought. The telecom staff were superb. They even let me in the shop 15 minutes early. Nice.

I upgraded from a 3GS (still have it actually, not sure if I should sell it or keep it as a spare)

but anyway, its definitely a lot faster, and I ahve to admit, the camera is _AMAZING_ compared to teh 3GS.

Havent had a chance to play with the video recording yet, but thats because I've been at work all day.
Not found much use for Siri yet, but I havnet been able to have a proper play yet.

Call quality seems pretty good to me compared to my 3GS, coverage in my building is a bit better (though being only one day, I wouldnt count my chickens before they hatch)

Battery has drained fairly quickly, though in t hat, I have also done an OTA iOS update (to 5.0.1)
I also have PUSH email + iCloud constantly on and have used an IM client for a while, as well as connected to the work wifi and played a little bit of Angry birds for probably about 20 minutes. Also took a 3 minute phone call. I'm currently sitting at 40%

My usage is 4 hours (spot on) and standby 8:57 minutes. However, being the first charge, things don't generally last long with a new cellphone anyway. Will give it a few charges and report back.

JimmyC: I only got mine done at lunch time but was told it would take effect just before 5pm.

Tell me, is there anything I need to cancel at the VF end, or is that all taken care of for me?

You shouldn't have to do anything, but give a week and call to check if the account is effectively closed. You should receive a final bill to pay.

Yes, all sorted and ported, mid-afternoon. Very pleased with the phone and the XT network so far.

Don't think so eh, it would probably be quicker to just order from Telecom or Vodafone online, they have an estimated 3-5 days shipping vs. 2-3 weeks or you could just pick one up in-store.
