ahmad: Having thought about this offer long and hard I can only come up with one major "catch" for the offer apart from:
1. $9.95 courier fee (which was not disclosed upfront, and only is mentioned well into the signup process over the phone - but which I accept is insignificant considering the overall offer), and;
2. If you decide to port your number to another provider or plan at the end of 12 months then I suspect you will be up for at least some pro rata of the $20 monthly fee that is due in the 13th month. You wouldn't do a port in the 12 month for fear of incurring an early disconnection penalty (far too difficult/impossible to plan to port it out exactly at the end of 12 month). So if you do it (say) in the first week of the 13th month then I suspect Slingshot would still charge you some or all of that $20 for the 13th month no matter how quickly you try to port in the 13th month.
Of course I'm hoping that the mobile market changes enough over the next 12 months that people that take up this offer will be offered something amazing next year to avoid a mass exodus of customers (hint hint)
ahmad: @Slingshot I know this post will be frustrating for lack of detail but you will just have to trust me on this one.
I've been spreading the word (virally) around my workplace and just hit a "wall". One colleague says that her husband has been without an active mobile number for "2-3 weeks".
She was very cagey when asked for more details, so I'm afraid I can't even PM anything to you, and she seemed resigned to accepting the outage.
Now I'm personally pretty annoyed at people that don't demand action/escalation for such issues as IMO they bring some of it upon themselves, and slagging off to people around them ultimately doesn't connect their phone.
However the reason I raise this here is that I hope you can give us some reassurance that we won't experience the same kinds of problems.
She claims that 3 weeks ago they accepted a total Slingshot package (for homeline, tolls, and mobile). She claims that her husband ported an 027 which has now been disconnected, but they cannot get the new Slingshot mobile active.
She claims that they are onto their "3rd SIM card".
That's all I know/was told. Sorry the details are sketchy. Sounds like a horror story and something I hope we don't have to experience when porting to Slingshot??

2. It's all one month in advance, so yes if on the 13th month it may prove difficult to escape the $20 access fee. Mind due you've just had it for free for a year ;)
Just simply trying to work out a true TCO over the life of the plan and I still can't understand how you guys are doing it
Good on you.
Slingshot:
Sorry to hear that. Not sure why that happened..
Could you get their account number or cell number? Will personally sort it out.
Also, if you have any issues what so ever, PM me and I'll take ownership.
That work for you?

danielfaulknor: Is there a limit to the number of times this offer can be taken up under one account?
I've been signing up friends and family and putting them under my account, one less account for them to sign up for :)

andrewcnz: I signed up on Monday and have heard nothing. Can log into my new slingshot account but no welcome letter or email...I did ring customer service they had no idea. Got an email asking me to rate the customer service I got. I have not replied as I have had no service at all.

You're in the same boat as me. I phoned up last night as was told that my phone and SIM would be sent out Friday.
richms: I got an email for the sim, and then one for the phone. Shame I seemed to order the wrong phone. Cant go thru the signup process again to see what it looked like but I only recalled one free phone listed.
