Hi, everyone bit of a stupid question here, just had fibre fitted after a year long wait. So the question is; what are the two boxes?

is the one on the wall (the optical termination) the modem and the box supplied the Router only?

or the supplied box is the router/modem. Have asked Slingshot and they give vague answer that does not answer the question and to confuse the issue some sites I've been on say its a router only and others say Modem/router.

Need this resolving as looking to replace the box supplied with my own as I would like dual band.

There is no need for a "modem" for a fibre connection. =-)

Modem is a "modulator / demodulator" that converts analogue to digital signal and vice versa (if I remember it correctly).

The box (a white box if you are in a Chorus area) on the wall is the ONT, optical network teminal. It allows you to connect your network equipment to the fibre network.

The equipment sent to you by Slingshot is a router.

post a photo, the other box is likely the connection back into your existing telephone wiring.

slingshot should supply you with a router, you plug that into the ONT which your fibre installer installed

Pretty much this.

A fibre connection doesn't actually use a "modem", but the Optical Network Terminal (ONT) could be thought of as a "fibre modem". This means that the other box will just act as a router.

Just to confuse things, the router may have an actual modem built into it, but this will only be used for ADSL/VDSL connections. I'm not sure what box Slingshot provides.

Yes, if you don't want to use the Slingshot router. Or you could get a separate wireless access point.

Do you have a phone service through the Slingshot router? If so, things will be a bit more complicated.

They gave me the Nv4f I believe, still have phone by copper, how would I set up my own router? Some friends tried but failed was thinking of buying their router.

think hes questioning why an ISP is giving out a router that doesnt have dual band wifi
