Frustrating - but they will get released and be here soon.  Enough other things to 'worry' about instead of a delayed phone :-)

If they get stock early next week and ship it to you via DHL (which is apparently 1 - 3 days international) you should be fine.  Powerbill should be ok according to their email as long as it shows your name and your address as provided.

I just scanned my drivers license and credit card and emailed it. They were happy with that. DHL from the uk should be about 4-5 days, maybe quicker.

Yep, I just had an email from them about the delay. I will take a look elsewhere and see if anybody has a price that is ballpark the same.

Sigh... Just had a pretty good look, the same delay has affected all online sellers. You can get it right now from places like Ebay, but I'm just not willing to pay the marked premium they're asking.

I think I'll sit tight a few more days and see how progress goes on getting full root access on the Desire (currently root access has been obtained, but HTC have implemented further protections, so there is still some work to be done here). For me it becomes a lot less desirable without full root access, so I may end up passing on it unless full access arrives in the next 5 days or so...

I guess if we all look on the bright side, it means that this phone is so good that demand has overwhelmed supply :)

So it looks like the Desire will definitely be worth the extra wait!! :D

I like to wait a month or two and let the bleeding edge folk discover the bugs / flaws...and then place my order if I still want to.

It's a strategy that sees me more current than most, and less burnt than 'the few'. Those brave few. :-)

A reasonable strategy for certain.  However, I like to think the Nexus One was the first cut of this phone and any necessary 'tweaks' have been made in releasing the Desire.  Coupled with the fairly favourable reviews its now getting I don't think you need to be too brave in ordering this.  The problem in waiting is, while valid, you see to many other upcoming releases and think 'I'll now just wait for that one' and we know where that leads.  I was almost tempted to wait for the Evo but as we can't yet take advantage of 4G, it won't be worth paining the premium for no matter how good the rest of its features are.  For now, I think the Desire offers a great 'in' point for an Android phone considering our NZ netwoks, features and price, and that it will hold anyone over nicely for a year or two - who knows what they'll be offering in our phones by then.

All good! :-)

In my mind I'm charting a trajectory that could / should see me ready to by the Samsung i8520 with the built-in pico projector......toward the end of the year.

I could seriously get into seeing my cell phone display on the wall or other convenient flat surface. :-)

But my new Nexus One should keep me occupied for a couple of months at *least*....if not more.

I'm always buying at first release, but not been burnt yet.

Its usually about having appropriately set expectations, which usually means having done your research, and the inclination to mercilessly tweak/hack/mod a brand new highend phone until it behaves just right :)

Heya, using the clove.co.uk site looks sweet.

What kind of customs taxes would there be on something over the value of $835ish?

Thanks,
J

From what I understand, 12.5% from the Customs website (for cellphones) and 12.5% GST. So 25% tax total on the amount + shipping. Correct me if i'm wrong!

No, I imported a bunch of Nexus Ones and they only charge 12.5% GST, plus an Import Entry Transaction Fee of $28.75 (which I think they've started charging in recent years to pay for increased parcel inspection costs). I also notice (I'm sure it wasn't there a couple of months ago): "A biosecurity risk screening levy of $4.00 is also collected by Customs on behalf of MAF Biosecurity New Zealand".  So on a phone declared at NZ$750 you're looking at about $127 in customs charges and GST.  If it's a business asset you can probably claim the GST portion back too (but IANAA, FWIW).

A side note from those wishing to purchase NZ chargers, I dealt with a very nice lady Linda who supplies chargers for all sorts of phones, and very reasonably priced: www.happymobile.co.nz (no personal connections, just a satisfied customer).  She has two micro-USB chargers (if indeed that is what the Desire uses), I'd recommend the more expensive one (Samsung branded) - it's around $14 from memory plus $3 postage, and she's always willing to cut you a deal if you order more than one.

Paul

EDIT: Oh, and of the three packages that arrived with the Nexus Ones I imported, one was not charged any GST or levies even though it was properly and legally declared well over the "limit" of $400. YMMV.

Whats the two lots of 12.5% for??  You only pay 12.5% GST.  No import duty..
