Will be interesting to see how this all plays out...  Had a Mate 20 Pro since December.  Everything is working as of right now, but if things start going pear shaped I'll be returning it for a refund under the CGA.  Really hope I don't have to since I love this phone, but unstable software and no Google integration are a no-option for me.

Does the CGA include this if it's not really the retailers fault? How will they cope with so many Huawei returns? the Mate 20/pro/x and P30 aren't cheap devices, it's really going to add up, especially if they can't sell them again. I really don't want to give up my Mate 20, there's really no alternative.

but there is no need to return them though, they will still receive updates and access to everying you currently have....

its only NEW devices, ie ones that are yet to come out

I mean beyond the 90 day grace period once Google officially stops support (if it comes to that) then all existing devices will be affected.

US lifts Huawei ban, but only temporarily and in a limited scope

from what i have read and the previous posts on here, it means they dont get pre release access to android OS updates and security patches but will have to get them in the public release. so you will still get patches and updates etc they just wont be as quick as they are now.

as for the play store, as far as im aware its only going to affect new devices not current ones

From the NZ Herald earlier today....

Consumer NZ technology reviewer Hadyn Green posted soon after the ban was announced, "If you live in New Zealand and the Huawei phone that you purchased no longer connects to the Play Store, and/or no longer receives security updates: you get a refund under the CGA [Consumer Guarantees Act]."

That was BEFORE the whole thing was clear, BEFORE the Google and Huawei announcements, BEFORE it was announced existing devices would continue to have access to the apps. Since then things changed a bit.

It is a wait and see. No devices have been blocked so there's nothing to test yet.

China have a bit of a monopoly on rare earth elements which are used to manufacture many of todays microelectronic devices.

I believe Japan were looking at deep sea mining for an alternative source, but for now the world is still reliant on China.

It could be quite disruptive if China decides to exercise their monopoly over these elements.

The US will smile and stab you in the back, China will smile and stab you from the front. Both are guilty of all sorts of atrocities, it's just that the US has a lot more PR spin and as we're a western nation our media gives us the US version of events while constantly demonising China and Russia, it's so blatant it's amazing people still fall for it. You can criticise all you want, they allow it because it gives you the illusion that you have a say, hence you stay obedient and complacent.

Tienanmen square massacre.

Syria, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Yemen, Guatemala, Congo, Brazil, Chile, Bolivia, Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, Laos, Vietnam, Indonesia - overthrew their governments and/or started wars against them resulting in the deaths of millions of innocent people

Social credit system.

Invented the technology for the Social Credit System, called it 'Equifax' and 'Facebook' so that private individuals could get rich off it. Spies on its own citizens secretly (as opposed to openly), acts ruthlessly to suppress those who speak up about it. Condemns to death & disease hundreds of thousands of people who can't afford healthcare that is free in practically every civilised country on the planet.

Concentration camps for mass imprisonment of the Uighur people.

Locks children in cages for the alleged sins of their parents, whilst exploiting thousands of people just like them for cheap labour with no legal protections.

Communism.

Unchecked capitalism. Power to the strong. Gerrymandering, voter suppression, barely pretends to respect the principle that nobody is above the law.

For me, stars and stripes any day!  I enjoy my freedom and the right to criticise the government when I disagree with them!

I don't want to live in China, but I wouldn't be holding up the USA as a shining beacon of hope & freedom.

If your country exports carrots expect to have to fix your own system of Government.

If your country exports oil expect to have 'assistance' in improving your system of Government.

10-15 Years ago this was highly true..

from 2020 not so much.....

https://www.cnbc.com/2019/01/15/surging-oil-output-will-push-us-towards-energy-independence-in-2020.html

This will either total embolden the US to throw its weight around more in the M.E , or it may see a strategic withdrawal from the region as its importance to US interests wanes...

Consumer advisory

https://www.consumer.org.nz/articles/google-blocks-huawei

Interesting that the article says that they have their own OS that could be rolled out as a last resort. I wonder what that is like. Guessing it is still based on android? IMO the OS and regular security updates are one of the major reasons for buying an iphone vs an android device.

Interesting also that the article appears to suggests that reasonably, the CGA  applies to phones when less 3 years. I wonder where they have got that figure  from as I thought it depended on many things, including the price and quality  etc? eg You would expect a $2000 dollar pone to last longer than a $100 phone. Especially as apple seem to provide iOS updates for about 5 years now for iphones, whereas on Android you maybe lucky to get 2-3 years from my experience with my current one.

You had me nodding until that. I trust neither the Trump administration nor the PRC government. But if I had to choose, I would choose 5 Eyes spying on me rather than PRC government. At least New Zealand is still in 5 Eyes.

Be careful what you wish for, US might say they have evidence of another middle east country they dont like having WMD and we would be away into a war again.
