This thread has reminded me of the wiring for our APs in our own house; again, we used an electrician, so mea culpa and all that!

But is there an easy way for a non-tech person such as myself to check that the wiring is done correctly? It's simply two CAT6 cables between the router and the two APs.

We have had problems with the APs holding a connection in the past, and I just wondered if this could be behind it.

Thanks.

Basic cable testers are pretty cheap and common from Trademe, ebay etc. Basically a two part unit, you plug half in at each end of the cable and it will check that the pins are wired up correctly. It might not pick up on a poor connection that works most of the time but occasionally comes loose.

You can get a moderately usable one for about us$45 or so off aliexpress that seems to pick up transposed pairs etc when a friend had some of that in their place. It gave lengths of the cable which were pretty overestimated however.

But for the sort of problems this install seems to have delivered the $4 blinking light sequance one will tell you that its not been done properly.

Hey all,

Update on this, had a data specialist in to sort everything out. All the cables are now beautifully crimped and working perfectly. Network is now up and running as planned, thank you all for your help and input.

Much happier chappy now :D

And importantly were they all tested and verified they will pass 1gbps symmetric with a low BER?
