I have an odd sound problem with my MySKy HD box.
I get intermittent, very short sound drop-offs. It happens most often on TV3, but also on Soho and Sky Sports (these are, I guess, the channels I watch most often).
Once the problem starts it becomes more frequent.
The only solution is to flick the box into 'standby mode' and back on. Once this is done, I can guarantee (usually!) several hours of problem free viewing.

Fully turning the power off for a short while also works.

Has anyone else had this sound 'artefact'?
Do I need to persuade Sky to give me a new box?
(I've had it 18 months; the problem was unchanged before & after moving house).

I'm guessing you have an HDMI hookup. What is the MySky HDMI resolution set to?

Connected to the TV only via HDMI.

When I check the Sky box settings, HD output resolution is set to 'Auto'.
The sound artefact happens equally on HD and non-HD channels.

Just for curiosity sake, change it to output 1080i or even 720p. See if that makes a difference.

I'll give it a go and let you know.

Have you come across similar problems?

Would a good quality HDMI cable make a difference?

I've seen problems over HDMI when something is set to 1080p. Even though the TV says it is capable of handling it.
Found knocking back the resolution would cure problems.

Not sure if a new HDMI cable would fix it. Certainly wouldn't spend $$s on a HDMI Cable

TAKE A PHOTO BEFORE YOU UNPLUG ANYTHING
Check the HDMI settings
tv3 has a known issue with DOLBY for some reason
MPG/PCM works best.
make sure if its optical that the ends are seated correctly, actually apply that logic across all cables.

Best way to make sure sky decoder is not faulty connect mysky to the tv directly and bypass any amps, and if the amp is connected the tv still take note of where the connection is then remove it (Take a photo before you do this). If the sound bug pops up then there is an issue between the box and the tv. if not then look at the amp link with some suspicion.

I would look at the possibility of it being:

HDCP - yes it causes issues even when it says HDCP Successful

DECT - Even if its not something in your house it can cause issues, e.g. Neighbours router or cordless phone.

But just my thoughts.

TAKE A PHOTO BEFORE YOU UNPLUG ANYTHING

good luck!

mySky HDi can't do 1080p.

A quick update: have changed the HDMI output setting from 'auto' to 1080.
So far so good (although I am watching the cricket rather than TV3 at the moment).

@wingbat: no amps or any other sound equipment, just the Sky box connected direct to the TV.

@spyware: funnily enough the 1080 setting seems to be going well so far.

I may try turning the Dolby setting off next time I'm watching TV3.

I'll update on progress!

No, changing the HDMI output to a lower setting hasn't solved it.

I am using an older TV(Samsung) , but have a newer TV that I may try instead to see if it improves the problem.
TV3 is the worst offender for the sound artefact, but happens commonly on other channels I watch frequently, too.

Solved (at least I think so).

It seems that the problem was with the TV.
It was an older Samsung (probably 7 years old, maybe a little older). It has a single HDMI connection.

I also have a newer Samsung TV (2 years old). I have swapped them over and haven't had the sound glitch at all so far.

So, it looks like the problem was with the TV and HDMI connection rather than the Sky+ box.

Thanks to all for the advice and suggestions.
