Is it possible to send an sms message (number) from a normal landline phone to a mobile?

No, it's not possible to do that. However, there are various web-based services that do it, or you can use Skype.

Just to clarify the answer slightly. It is something that can be done in many countries overseas and there are plenty of handsets in the NZ marketplace that support this (since it's available in Australia and we typically get the same models here) however the service is not available in NZ at all.

Thanks guys .... I'd searched with no luck, so was expecting that answer .... I was hoping there might be a third party provder along the lines of the old telecom pager service, where you dial a number, punch in the pager number and a code, and the code gets dispatched to the pager (or phone).

While at Unisys (the Telecom VSP provider) I wrote a mobile-to-landline SMS (with text-to-speech) and a co worker wrote a landline-to-mobile SMS application and showed this to Telecom New Zealand, about five years ago. This was never approved and now the VSP is giving way to other platforms...

There are a few which work from a PC to a mobile for free.

I cannot remember what they are called, freitasm may remember.

Though ive found that they are not very reliable.

Back when the .COM boom was happening in 2000, there were quite a few free services like this. But most of them have disappeared.

To send an SMS from Skype costs around NZ 14c. Quite a bit cheaper than sending from a mobile...

GizmoSMS offers free SMS (but it won't work in New Zealand). CallWave offers free SMS including Windows Vista Sidebar Gadget, Google Gadget and Mac OS Dashboard Widget. No reply-path though.

back in the "days" when mobile was "new and cool" There was lots of really cool stuff that was developed and never made it to market. The few that made it to market was Chatmail/Wordup, Pulsate (Very well presented youth brand and much better marketing than "boost") I still have snippets of all sorts of "work arounds" for testing and copied of the Web portals (pulsate's was very cool), of course, none will work anymore. I even have on sob obscure wap site (tagtag) a custom menu and login for the old dJuice which worked for almost 2 years after it was "decommissioned". Those good old days or mega-innovation are gone sadly. most stuff is very boring of recent.

This has been in place in the UK for about 18 months or so.
When sending an SMS from a mobile to a landline BT have used the voice of Tom Baker (previous Doctor Who) resulting in much hilarity by sending 'rude' messages and hearing The Doctor reading them out

You can also sending SMS from landlines to mobiles. Not sure if you can send from landl;ine to landline. I assume you can, but I never tried it...

There is an SMS landline modem available in Australia from Envious Technology (www.envioustechnology.com.au), which connects to your PC and enables you to send SMS messages through a Telstra landline. It's called the Z-Text and it works well, I use it with a home automation system to send SMS notifications (eg. if garage door opens during the day). It includes software similar to an email client (with inbox/outbox etc) for sending and receiving SMS. Cost is 25c each and much easier than having a GSM modem as don't need to sign up to anything!

Oops didn't notice this was a NZ forum! Well when NZ telecoms bring in this feature then the Z-Text modem will be able to help!

Welcome to Geekzone! Don't worry about being a New Zealand forum - it's good to know of other products. And seeing that some of the telco folks lurk around here, it's great to have feedback on some products so that they can get a "reality check".
