Want to purchase apple tv - been looking into it for a while

Its convincing so far with access to Netflix and wireless airplay yay! But have also found theres live sports streaming etc - but am wondering - is this American based? or can we access from NZ? Also is there a subscription fee? Apple Website doesn't tell me much - and it seems to be a uniform site for all countries with not much changes to specify what that country can get...

Are you aware that in order to watch things like Netflix via the Apple TV you need to subscribe to a DNS unblocking service, change the Apple TV's location in settings to USA in order to see the channels, either have a US iTunes account to fund your Netflix monthly subscription, or set up an account directly with them using a US address?

I can't comment on the live sports streaming.

yup - we had an account with netflix previously - but stopped coz of how much data it was using but now we're going unlimited with our ISP so that side of things is all good :)

Its just the sports streaming i'm wondering about and also other channels that you supposedly can get on apple tv :)

Well when you change the country location to the USA it opens up a whole bunch of other channels that aren't available in NZ.

Do you know if those channels are captioned as well?

Looks like a real decent list! I knew there were a few channels but looking at that, i'm even more impressed!

You also need the us apple account to 'buy' the free hbo/Netflix apps in the first place, though googling this made the setup easy enough for me. Couple years back...

No the channel list displayed is dependent on what you have your country set to in the settings. Accessing those channels is what requires Unblock-Us, etc.

There is Red Bull TV app which has pretty much any sports event that red bull sponsors ie air race, x-fighters, has mountain biking. you can watch NBA, NHL and MLB but these require a subscription. NBA and NHL seasons are over halfway through the playoffs now, nearly at the finals. so not worth purchasing subs now, but for next season if you are into them I recommend it. you can also watch short highlights of each match without getting a subscription to them. I believe if you set it up with the us account though there are blackouts on the national games for NBA. if you have a us account you can also watch the MLS with an extra subscription, same deal applies though you can watch highlights of the games without a subscription. also there is the watchespn app with the US account, but you need a us cable subscription to watch stuff live or on replay, but there are highlight videos from sportscenter on there which you can watch without the cable subscription link up.

the apple tv is a cool device use it pretty much daily. I have an NHL subscription, which was $125 through the app store at the start of the season but it didn't really cost that much cause I buy the vouchers when they are on special so it was only like $100 really, great value cause it has all regular season and playoff games plus every game from the past 3 of 4 seasons, plus some classic games from through out the past 50 odd years.

I used the mlb (baseball) app for a while. It's really good - if you follow the sport of course! You need to register with mlb and pay direct to them and just like with Netflix you then get access to it via Apple TV. The quality was pretty good although it did drop at times. You can do things like choose a home or away commentary but it was bit as full featured as the PC version of mlb. That didn't bother me though, I just wanted to watch the games.

It frustrates me NZ Sports are not on onboard with this technology.

Sorry when I say the quality dropped I mean it dropped in bit rate for a couple of seconds. No drop outs or black screen.
