This post is for the Chinese members who live in NZ and are looking for online Chinese streams. Kiwis who are tech savvy but have relatives who aren't and just want to watch content from back home.
I've been doing a bit of research online to find some stable Chinese/Hong Kong streaming services that are available in NZ.
Backstory:
I'm not a huge fan of the one-off set top boxes that are fixed/pre-loaded with channels from China. They're great for the first few months/1 year but after the provider has been cracked down by the CCP the service stops and there's very little you can do to fix it. There's no support from them whatsoever so if you have any problems then you're SOL. I've got some relatives who have gone through about 3/4 boxes already since they stopped working.
Online streaming re-sellers are a bit of hit and miss as well especially given the fact we're based in NZ. So finding a decent/stable re-seller with a good connection is a bit annoying.
I do remember subscribing to SkyTV a few years back only for the 5/6 Chinese channels but found it a bit ridiculously that they charged about $80/month... We stayed with them for only about a year before calling it quits due to the cost.
Some legitimate services I've found so far are:
- FreeviewNZ channels (channels 28, 29, 37) - This might be good enough for some people. Channel 28 occasionally broadcasts local NZ news in mandarin as well.
- WTV - The parent company for channels 28 and 29. They have an official set top box from TVB (Hong Kong broadcasting giant). I could only get details about this service by calling WTV directly so they could email me the T&S and application form. Very pricey at $68/month.
- KylinTV - They have a free online preview for their channels and they all seem to have a stable connection. A lot of channels from mainland and a select few Cantonese speaking ones too. They have a NZ contact number too which I assume means they have servers close to NZ/Aus region. $16.99/month but not sure if that's AUD or NZD (or even USD).
- TVBAnywhere+ - A new service by TVB. It was released globally sometime this year August so its relatively new. They have 3 different packages (they call them zones).
Free Zone - Just register a free account with them and install the app. Let's you watch a lot of their old TVB catalog tv-shows. No movies as far as I can tell.
VOD Zone - $4.49 USD/Month. Allows you to watch the latest episodes once they finished airing in Hong Kong.
Channel Zone - $4.49 USD/Month. Live Hong Kong channels with 3 hour rewind/playback function.
I'm personally using FreeviewNZ for the local news and subscribed to TVBAnywhere+ (Channel Zone) since my parents are interested in the Hong Kong issue. It's costing me roughly $8 NZD/month.
The Free Zone (from TVBAnywhere+) keeps my parents busy as well since they can rewatch some of their favourite series.
Hopefully this post becomes somewhat helpful for future Chinese Kiwis.
