Mana leader Hone Harawira has filed for a recount of the votes in Te Tai Tokerau.

He lost the electorate on election night to Labour's Kelvin Davis by a margin of 739 votes, and has refused to concede defeat since.

Harawira told TVNZ's Marae programme that refusing to concede stretched out the use of his parliamentary perks.

"One of the good things about not conceding, for those of you in politics, is if you concede on the night all your travel benefits stop at 12 o'clock," Mr Harawira said.

"If you don't [concede], you get to fly round the country and go and see all your people for the next two weeks."

I can't believe people like him are allowed anywhere NEAR the political process.

He's every bit as obnoxious in person as well.

Your quote selection is misleading. It implies that his request for a recount is intended to/and stretches out the parliamentary travel allowances. That is 100% incorrect.

Same article:

"Travel benefits cease for former members on the day they resign or on polling day, if they do not stand, or on declaration day if they stand and are unsuccessful." Declaration day was Saturday, when the commission announced the formal election result with the count of the special votes.

Harawira's parliamentary travel allowances stopped on declaration day - Saturday - the day that all the special vote counting was completed and published.

The recount will examine the basis of rejecting special votes:

Mana General Secretary Gerard Hehir said the party had some concerns over the way some votes were discounted. "Particularly around special votes, we understand almost 1000 special votes have been rejected and we've just got a lot of concerns irrespective of whether it changes the outcome or not," he said. "It's particularly around how the enrolment status of those votes was evaluated, and how our understanding is that the recount process will actually allow a judge to look at not just counting the votes, but also the status of those votes."

McNab confirmed the party had made a specific request of the assigned judge to look, not only at the votes, but also the basis on which special votes were rejected due to the enrolment status of the voter.

Personally I think it is desirable that democratic processes are audited from time to time. A recount is a sensible way to achieve this if there are any concerns.

So you still believe that parliamentary allowances will continue until the recount is complete? You are incorrect. Harawira's parliamentary allowances stopped on declaration day.

Is HE mistaken?

Surely if he was mistaken, had he of actually been flying around all this time, he would have been paying and therefore wouldn't be making the comments ?

I would not expect any politician in a close race to concede until the special votes were counted.

The special votes were counted and announced on declaration day and that is when his parliamentary allowances were stopped. Until then he was still a member of parliament.

Edit: To be specific - the part you are missing is that a recount does not change this.

No, as above Harawira is right. You are wrong.

From the article

But a spokeswoman for Parliamentary Services confirmed declaration day was typically the date at which parliamentary travel entitlements were cut off for former MPs, regardless of whether they've conceded.

A Concession is not a resignation, so whether he gave one or not on election night, he still keeps his perks until declaration day,
