I've searched but can't find a similar topic - hope someone can help. I have a Samsung smart tv which is about 3.5 years old (can look up the model if that is useful).
When watching freeview TV it will randomly turn off, sometimes every few minutes, sometimes once an hour (it's very random). We will also lose control using the remote - pressing buttons on the remote will make the red light on the TV flash but the channel or volume won't change. The off button eventually works but is delayed. Occasionally we will lose sound but this is less frequent.
These issues only happen with freeview channels, we could use Netflix, YouTube etc for hours on end with no problems.

It's pretty frustrating - has anyone had the same issue and is there a fix for it? Thanks!

Sounds weird, model would help a few things to try, i) sure you are not just losing power? ii) some have a menu reset feature might be worth a go iii)search for new firmware and load that using a USB (or if it has network can find its own under support menu).

Odd as it sounds - try removing power to it for a short period of time, then plug it back it. I had issues recently with our Samsung tv not being able to correctly do ARC, and that was the only way to solve the problem. (Classic “time for a reboot”)

Second this.  Ours also acts strangely from time to time.  Disconnect all power, push the power button to ensure all power is dissipated, then wait a few seconds and power up again.

I know you say it's random, but I take it you have checked the screen saver and auto off function settings?

Thanks for your replies.
The model is UA40J5500 40" FHD LED.

I've checked the screen saver and auto off functions and it isn't them. Losing power could make sense for the turning off, but not so much for the losing control?

I unplugged it for 9 days over the school holidays and it is still doing funny things now we're back.

We tried to reset it to factory settings a while back but not sure if we were successful - I can't remember how we ended up doing it but remember it wasn't clear to me what to choose.

I'll have to look into how to load the new firmware - not something I've heard of before but my knowledge is pretty basic!

As others have mentioned, it's quite likely a power issue. A supplier/repairer I knew didn't stock Samsung televisions until recently due to power supply problems with older models. Likely repairable, but I wouldn't bother.

We had our 3 year old Samsung TV's power supply replaced under CGA.  Easy as, Samsung were great to deal with.  Got a case number, booked it in to the local agents, and had it back the next day.
