I'm heading into Harvey Normans tomorrow to get a Compaq Presario V3744AU. It looks the goods and its under $1500. Can anyone let me know if they've have any good or bad experiences with this (or similar) Compaqs? Just wouldn't mind some reassurance on my major purchase. The specs look good, but you never really know...

My Compaq I got from a year ago didn't come with much 'extra' software, other than the HP-related software (like Update, QuickPlay etc...)

Cheers. I was also wondering what sort of things I need to watch out for with Vista (Home Premium). This is my first experience with it, and all I've heard so far is horror stories. Are there any things I should do right off the bat to make things run more smoothly?

It should run fine straight out of the box, because everything is pre-installed and -configured for you.

I wouldn't necessarily touch anything, unless it causes actual problems.

That is a good thing! Haha, Toshiba and HP tend to stuff their new notebooks with all the software in the world - mostly useless, just slows down the system!

This is a list of 'useless' stuff I can remember, by going through the 'SwSetup' folder (a really nice folder by the way - it has all the drivers and the 'other' stuff):

- Norton Internet Security 2005/6? Trial
- muvee autoproducer 5
- Roxio Creator Basic 9 (although I still use it)

Too right. My wife's Compaq seemed to be loaded with rubbish!
